Do you think that this world lives inside a too big tabu?

So if you ask yourself this question and think about your mental illness, then do you kind of feel like you’d live in a tabu-world?

Not sure what a tabu is.

I think he means taboo? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Oh, that. I call that the Fun Zone.

It means that we don’t talk or have certain things settled in a global society. If you say that you’re a Sz, probably most of the people take it as “gotta keep some distance to these people” instead of understanding.

Yeah, sorry, taboo indeed, this word is tabu in Finnish.

No worries I figured it out.

The SZ stigma dial got cranked to eleven in my province some years back when a d00d with SZ killed a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus and then the police stood around for half a day while he cannibalized his victim. The incident was so bad that bus ridership dropped precipitously, to the point where Greyhound cancelled all of their prairie routes.

So, no, I don’t wear a t-shirt around my area advertising my health condition.

I think many people understand. Especially people who have someone in their family who is ill or people who work in psychatric fields. But there will also be people who wouldn’t understand if you talked to them for a million years.

It can be a hard subject to talk about though. Many times I have been asked how are you doing while at work and I just say OK or fine when I’m having trouble with the disease or side effect from the meds. But on the other hand I guess that is me thinking it serves no purpose to go into detail about my mental health.

On an un-tabood planet people would understand that this case was a rare one around the Sz-world, - so my point was just proved then.

I’ve had enough unpleasant experiences on public transit that I refuse to use it ever again. Doesn’t take just those with SZ to ruin something for everyone (I now avoid Walmart based on the same principle).

I think it’s really just that people fear what they can’t understand or relate to. Of diseases to have I think schizoprenia or psychosis is on top of that list. People might assoiciate sz with psychopathy although they are completely different things, but yeah, it’s the way it is although I think we are making progress in developed countries on understanding these things.

Yeah, this world hasn’t developed things that far yet then.

I went to the ER because I hadn’t slept in many days. When the doctor pulled my record the first thing he asked was if I was seeing or hearing things. lol. I guess credibility is hard earned with this disease.

One of my besties was diagnosed with terminal cancer this past week. He has suddenly noticed some friends and family avoiding him because they’re uncomfortable in his presence now.

Sounds strange. Maybe it evokes the thought of death for them. But I still don’t see why they would avoid him. Although I can understand that making conversation can maybe be a challenge in such a situation. But I guess that’s just psychology. Nobody knows how much time they have on this earth. I mean even healthy people could die at any time.

yup yup, a lot of taboo in my life. Very few people know the truth.

All about dat taboo livin

I understand the taboo of mental illness of any sort and I won’t be the first person to get up and yell “hey, I’m schizophrenic!” but I also look for times when people are curious about mental illness and I get the chance to educate them about the realities of being mentally ill in our current society. For example, I volunteer to share my experiences with first responders undergoing CIT (crisis intervention training), so that these police officers and paramedics can better respond on mental health calls. I consider myself an advocate.

I don’t mind telling people I have SZ. If they don’t like it that’s their problem. I prefer to have friends who are open minded and understanding anyways. Most people I’ve told are surprised because I hide it well.
