Do you have avolition?

Someone said the word avolition on here and I Googled it. Didn’t know what it meant but I have been struggling with it for a couple weeks I guess.

Is there a trick to being more motivated?

Yeah, coffee and maybe an antidepressant. Forcing yourself to eat well and do exercise allways helps.

Reading about it, they say that therapy has a good chance to help. I´m not too much into therapy but I guess it will help some people.

I think less apathy means more motivation. The change may start with specific things.

I also think apathy leads to avolition. I have severe apathy and avolition, stays in bed all day everyday, only get up to eat. Without regular strong coffee I sleep all day 15+hours and won’t even be on this forum.

I’ve just been mindlessly scrolling the internet lately. Not even enjoying it, just scrolling.

Do you have any hobbies? I mean I´m no one to talk, +1 to scrolling the internet mindlessly. But I am almost allways listening to music.

I like to dance. I could turn on a youtube video and dance in my living room I guess.

My work/study is a musical instrument. I take like 15 minutes to play it (while scrolling the internet mindlessly in between). But I can do it 9 or 10 times a day.

There´s also the 5 minute rule, which I find very helpful. If you need to do something but you really don`t want to do anything. Just do it for 5 minutes, and see if you want to continue from there.

ive had avolition for several years. you have good days and bad one.
some days its hard to do anything. other days you might do stuff but its just pointless stuff like ‘mindlessly scrolling’ i relate to that.

a scheduler app helps me, ive recently started using one in the past month. helps me get stuff done. i use habitica app. its like a game. and i like to treat life like a game so it works for me.

also what someone @dreamer54 mentioned the 5 minute rule is a great help. I use that one a lot.

Anti-depressants work well for me in this regard.

Exercise is great if you dance then do it regularly. Really helps with my negs and it gets easier the more you do it.

Yes my motivation levels are bad 90% of the time.

I’d have a few good days where I’d clean the bathrooms or start a painting

But then the fog comes back and my painting is untouched for a month or so and bathrooms get dirty.

The other day I swept the stairs that had dust accumulating in corners and my husband said he wanted to take a photo of me he was so happy

But the painting is still waiting…

I wonder if there is some explanation for avolition other than a brain chemistry problem. I sometimes have negative thoughts that I don’t feel like doing anything. I’m lazy, unresolved, hopeless, and a quitter.
Instead I want to talk myself into being more active.
But the point of this concept is that avolition is a symptom that many people with schizophrenia have. I can’t overcome it completely. I will fight against it.
I recognize that some people have more avolition and the only reason for them is the illness itself.

There is many degrees of sz. I have all symptoms even catatonia. On meds I have severe negative and cognitive symptoms only.

Maybe set goals and break them into mini goals.

Well Attitude can play a big part in avolition too.
So you can work on that and I bet it will improve a bit.
You can do it

but yep definitely the illness is a core factor
