A recent review pooled prevalence rates of remission and recovery using previous studies of adults who experienced a first episode of psychosis.
The prognosis of individuals who experience a first episode of psychosis, including schizophrenia, is variable and difficult to predict. While certain individuals will resume some degree of daily functioning, others will encounter more persistent symptoms that interfere with their abilities to participate in social and occupational activities.
The researchers identified 79 studies with a total of 19,072 patients that met their criteria for inclusion. Of these studies, 12,301 reported remission data, and 9,642 reported recovery data. The pooled rate of remission for individuals with first-episode psychosis was 58% with a mean follow-up period of 5.5 years, and the pooled recovery rate was 38% with a mean follow-up period of 7.2 years. North American studies reported higher remission rates than studies from other regions.

Good to see you back @firemonkey
Thanks for another interesting article. I’ve saved this to read properly later.
I had my first episode. Went on meds for a year then came off meds. 2 years later the fun started and I was hospitalised.

Recovery especially is not that well defined

What does ‘recovery’ mean?
DR. MANSCHRECK: Researchers at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, including Robert Liberman and Alex Kopelowicz, proposed a definition of schizophrenia recovery that includes sustaining 4 benchmarks for a least 2 consecutive years:
working or going to school full- or part-time
living independently without the need for supervision
not depending entirely on disability insurance for financial support
sharing activities with friends on a regular basis.
These criteria were validated in a pilot study of 23 persons considered to have recovered from schizophrenia.6

Thats recovery but what is remission?
My pdoc said one can only recover if you start ap right after the first psychosis and you dont stop ap…which means you dont get the second psychosis…only then some can live without ap eventually.
I stopped my meds right away and got many psychosis.
remission is defined as a minimal degree of symptoms as measured by the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS).
