What good is pain? Is it necessary for life?

Pain is a motivator for action. It happens when something is not right with our body and our evolution wants us to do something about it

IDK, in AA when they’re talking about whether an addict or alcoholic needs to get clean for himself they say,
ā€œWhen the pain of staying the same gets greater than the fear of making a change, then that’s when a person will seek help.ā€

Yes. Pain is part of growing as a person.

I’d prefer if everyday was a party. Than having to deal with pain… saying that I’ve found myself with both and happy with who I am as a person! I have my days! And I’m ok with that!

No pain, no gain.

Hurting a child is much different than hitting on an adult. We try to avoid pain to children because they already feel so helpless just because they are only children.

Bleh. It’s like playing a videogame in God mode. Gets boring fast. The fun is in overcoming the obstacles on your own.

There are people with a very rare genetic mutation who do not feel pain (physical pain, anyway)…they do not tend to make it into adulthood. Pain is necessary for survival.

Pain is so important in an evolutionary sense. It reinforces behavior that isn’t going to kill you.

Like antibiotics are relatively new in the scheme of human history. You got wounds from cuts and stuff and it could be life threatening back in the day which wasn’t that long ago.

As an evolutionary step pain helps you do things to avoid it which is so beneficial for someone trying to survive. Even emotional pain is something you can learn around to avoid to I would say.

I kinda don’t believe in pain anymore. I believe in grace over pain any day.

There have been some very good answers so far. I think Jinx may be going for an even deeper question, though.

The philosopher Voltaire touched on it with with the character ā€œPanglossā€ in the play "Candide’:

Do we live in the best of all possible worlds?

I think that the answer is no. We do not live in the best of all possible worlds. I think that a theoretical world without severe ā€œpainā€ is possible. I don’t think that it is possible while respecting the free will and power of sadists, who enjoy pain in others.

I think that I still recall the conclusion of ā€˜Candide’ in an English translation: After Pangloss again asserts that they live in the best of all possible worlds, despite the pain, Candide says something like: ā€œThat may be, but let’s cultivate our garden.ā€
