They are more accepted than Schizophrenics.
Rather have 1 disability instead of 2. I don’t need more stigma. I look and act normal.
ok can you change your thoughts?
Thanks for posting this article.
People who suffer from autism also suffer the same social isolation as we do. Good point.
That’s debatable . Both experience a marked lack of acceptance. Finally it’s not a contest. Both need more support and understanding.
Amen to that. We don’t need to debate over who has it worse. We just need to stand in solidarity with our neurodiverse brothers and sisters.
Too true. Going slightly off on a tangent here is a post I made elsewhere about birthday parties.
Can you remember birthday parties as a child/teenager ? I can’t other than I remember going to one and we watched a cartoon on a home cinema(early 60s style) . From the age of 8 I can’t remember one birthday invite. My own birthdays we went to the cinema ,mainly, or some other artistic event . There were no parties with other children.
I’m not saying that we have it worse.
Both disorders are stigmatized.
By Hollywood standards, Autism is more accepting than Schizophrenia.
I disagree. I think autism is more glamorized by Hollywood, but that can be even worse for folks who actually have it. People go into things expecting a quirky genius or savant, but then run scared at the behavioral crises and such. It’s still an inaccurate portrayal of the disorder, and it still hurts the people who actually have it.
@Ninjastar https://spectrumnews.org/opinion/viewpoint/portrayals-autism-television-dont-showcase-full-spectrum/
Sadly, ‘Autistic’ is still widely used as an insult. (some people ‘insulted’ me with this word when I was starting to withdraw and become quieter).
Schizophrenics are viewed as being violent.
Often getting compared to psychopaths.
This is not happening with Autism.
Just saying.
I’m Autistic and have Schizophrenia
must have been triggered by weed and lsd in about '92
i have great worry that my family doesn’t accept me, but if i try to explain anything - they say - you’re being a child - you are really annoying me (this one really shouted with a load of anger)
I have schizophrenia which puts me in a slight sub type of Autism with sciz
my husband is Autistic.
he is in full time work (rare in Autism)
He’s a bit of a hero.
I’m too unwell to manage one entirely normal day (filled with activity from 6am to 11 pm in full public settings
where i would not cope with a job that expected that even once a week
what I’m getting at is I can’t work
i’ve tried i did full time in a farm shop for 6 months of no meds (leading to very long term hospitalisation which was very tough to get well from
most of the time a couple of hours in engagement once or couple of times a week i can cope with.
neither of us have learning disabilities
Violent crime and ASD/AD
Reports in the past 2 decades have described violent behavior in persons with ASD/AD. Because of the sensational and unusual nature of these criminal incidents, there is a perception by the public that persons with these disorders, especially those with AD, are predisposed to violent behavior. (Incidents allegedly committed by persons with ASD include the 2007 Virginia Tech campus shooting and the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre.6)
Yet neither the original descriptions by Kanner (of autism) and Asperger, nor follow-up studies based on the initial samples studied, showed an increased prevalence of violent crime among persons with ASD/AD.7
Yes the Stigma is just awful with both disorders.
My opinion is that it’s worse with Schizophrenia
My final word on it.
As I said it’s not a contest. What we don’t need is a ‘Mine is worse than yours’ situation. The various ASD and schizophrenia organisations should be working together not competing against each other.
My ASD type symptoms are probably the worst for me , but that has never stopped me trying to help here.
For me the issue is not societal attitudes, but lack of a cure.
I think we need to treat schizophrenia at a good level,
that’s the main thing.
Complaining about societal attitudes is a conservative approach.
I agree.
No hard feelings @firemonkey ![]()
Unfortunately societal attitudes are a big factor. People donate far more towards cancer research than ASD or schizophrenia research precisely because it is seen in a more sympathetic light. If we want more money for research to improve care and treatment then we need to get more of society on board.
