Apartment sitting

I’m watching my aunt’s cat. Every time I try to walk to her she would scold or hss at me. Do y’all know what that means?

Probably just that something is different and she is worried about it. Some cats don’t respond well to change.

What should I do? I’m scared

Maybe just leave her alone and she will get used to you being there after a while?

She’s scared, too. It’s what that hiss means. If you’re staying at your aunt’s place with the cat, try this:

Don’t make eye contact.
If you have to walk past her, give her as wide a berth as possible.
When you can, stay in a different room. Leave the door open and if the cat comes in, ignore her.
In any way you can, try to give the impression that you don’t notice the cat and are not interested in the cat.

There’s a chance she may relax and become more friendly if she understands that you’re not in any way a threat to her. Or she might decide to ignore you and hope you go away. But if she thinks you might do anything to her, she’ll remain frightened and hostile, and might get worse.

I have a cat that sounds a lot like your aunt’s. She likes me and that’s it. My pet sitter just ignores her as much as she can, and it works.
