Antipsychotic Discontinuation After Functional Recovery in FEP Linked to Relapse, Study Shows

Antipsychotic discontinuation following functional recovery in patients after a first episode of psychosis (FEP) appears to be associated with a very high rate of relapse compared with those who maintain antipsychotic treatment, according to a report that appears in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

Moreover, the time to relapse was faster for those who discontinued medication compared with those who relapsed on maintenance treatment, say researchers.

It actually says a possible side effect of coming of meds is acute psycotsis, in some cases I do believe it’s possible to scare psycotsis out of people.

Coming off any drug can make a schizophrenic psychotic. It happened to me after I quit my meds or skipped a dose, after I quit heroin, after I quit meth, and the last time I quit meds during a clinical study drug trial.

No more drugs period.

It’s a given, you take thw brain off it’s support system and 9 times out of 10 the ■■■■ is going to hit the fan

Coming off drugs is not for the faint of heart, half the people who try walking in my shoes would’ve ended it. If I tried going on and off meds again, who knows how it will end

@Butteredtoast and @Wallwalker1993: Congrats to you both on completely missing the point of the original post.

@pixel is the just of it was that people who discontinue there meds are more likely to relapse?

Research is consistently proving out these facts:

  1. Those SZs who do best are almost always those who are med compliant.
  2. Paying attention to diet, exercise, and getting therapy are also very helpful.
  3. SZs who go off meds generally crash hard and fast. Meds tend to be lifelong.
  4. Permanent, crippling side-effects from meds are incredibly rare. Most SZs are at more risk when not receiving proper treatment.

The Chicken Little routine you two have going about “never gonna touch Dem Pills Dem Pills ever again” is cute, but has no resemblance to reality.

I would’nt mind getting on meds if I were married and had kids along with other reaponsibilities.

As for now though the only person I can hurt is myself, and seeing as I have that free horse spirit I know to well, I would not recommend meds for “me” at the moment.

I speak for no one else but myself as a man

I have a personal goal to wrastle this beast on my own

@pixel ok thanks for clearing that up, I don’t disagree with any of those points they’re proven. are you not suppose to be a moderator or something? There’s no need to make petty statements about people’s perogative not to take meds if they’re allowed to refuse them.

Political correctness is for other people. I’m a busy person outside of this community – don’t have time to sugar coat the obvious.

what is obvious about it? I’d say I show a degree of ignorance not fully reading posts and I am narcissic In the way I talk about myself, I wouldnt argue the point at one stage I was ill, I’d say it was dealt with in an incorrect manor, time was what I needed for fruther reading. Not meds. I took them as an exercise to see what they do to people, I now know. You may have different experiences to mine, you may have been on different meds. You may see positives. I have no diagnosis at the moment, apart from side effect induced depression, I am considered normal by a doctor, which you are not.

So what are you doing here? I don’t see you giving much in the way of support which would be a genuine reason for a non mentally ill person to take part here.

What’s so hot about being normal? I’m higher functioning than most neurotypicals, which is the opinion of at least two psychiatrists and my family physician who finds my volunteering schedule tiring to even hear about.

Possibly he’s fishing for people for a class action lawsuit? I don’t know.

Honestly, all I’ve seen is him trying to scare people off meds, complaining about sexual side effects, berating people for not reporting side effects they’re not experiencing, and undermining other users’ recoveries. I keep waiting for the tune to change, but it’s all variations on the same thing.

Because I have been through it, I do my best to help others on the forum via what I have experienced, most notiably severe side effects.

I’ll clear that up sorry I didn’t mean it to come across insulting, you pointed the finger towards it being obvious that I should be on meds, while you are not a doctor, but a doctor has said I do not have to take them

Scaring people with exaggerated or very rare severe side effects (as though they are commonplace ) is doing your best to be supportive? If it smells like a fish…
