•After the first 3 years, antipsychotic treatment for schizophrenia is less effective.
•20 years sustained of antipsychotic treatment does not improve work function in schizophrenia.
•Many non-medicated schizophrenia patients show adequate work functioning after the acute phase of illness.[/QUOTE]
I seriously question whether there are ‘many’ non-medicated patients with adequate work functioning; though of course it depends on how you define ‘many’ and ‘adequate’.
The truth is medicated or non medicated many people with schizophrenia, or other severe mental illnesses, don’t work.
How much that proves the ineffectiveness of medication, or how much it proves other factors beyond medication are involved in getting people into employment, is highly debatable.
There may, for example, be comorbid reasons not amenable to treatment by antipsychotics why employment doesn’t occur .
