When did you become aware that what you were wearing mattered socially?
Did you ever fall into any particular styles?
How have your ideas of fashion and willingness to adhere to fashion changed over the years?
I became painfully aware that clothes mattered the first day of 4th grade.
My mom had worked for weeks to arrange the perfect outfit, as this was a new school for me.
It was a yellow frilly shirt, overalls with sunflowers on them, and keds.
But the real cherry on this sundae were the socks.
(You ladies remember this, don’t you?)
I thought I was so fancy and proper.
I was dead wrong.
Got to school and all the girls were wearing very mid 90s clothing.
Bright colors that clashed,
Much cooler overalls (those were pretty trendy for an embarrassingly long time and I’m seeing them come back. I worry for the children).
Name brand athletic shoes,
And endless scrunchies.
I had a chili bowl haircut, so, zero scrunchies.
It was mortifying.
That next year I was put in private school and wore uniforms until mid 8th grade.
Mom once again screwed me on my first day of public school with an actually very cute outfit of well fitting jeans and a navy shirt, tucked in.
This was the beginning of Y2K fashion and once again,
I was totally off.
I tried several styles over the years.
In 10th grade I did full on gothic phase.
For my last couple years of high school I probably was the most “fashion” I’ve ever been.
Everyday was a statement piece and I really put an effort into my look.
I’ll admit.
I looked pretty fabs.
Tacky?
Yes.
Over-the-top?
Yes.
But it was fun.
In college I discovered you can actually get away with wearing what you wore to sleep all around campus,
So that was my aesthetic the next few years.
Into my early 20s I just wore what seemed sexy.
Then quickly became what I am now a couple years into marriage.
Flannel.
Lots of flannel.
How about you?
