Your personal evolution with fashion

When did you become aware that what you were wearing mattered socially?

Did you ever fall into any particular styles?

How have your ideas of fashion and willingness to adhere to fashion changed over the years?

I became painfully aware that clothes mattered the first day of 4th grade.

My mom had worked for weeks to arrange the perfect outfit, as this was a new school for me.

It was a yellow frilly shirt, overalls with sunflowers on them, and keds.

But the real cherry on this sundae were the socks.

(You ladies remember this, don’t you?)

I thought I was so fancy and proper.

I was dead wrong.

Got to school and all the girls were wearing very mid 90s clothing.

Bright colors that clashed,

Much cooler overalls (those were pretty trendy for an embarrassingly long time and I’m seeing them come back. I worry for the children).

Name brand athletic shoes,

And endless scrunchies.

I had a chili bowl haircut, so, zero scrunchies.

It was mortifying.

That next year I was put in private school and wore uniforms until mid 8th grade.

Mom once again screwed me on my first day of public school with an actually very cute outfit of well fitting jeans and a navy shirt, tucked in.

This was the beginning of Y2K fashion and once again,

I was totally off.

I tried several styles over the years.

In 10th grade I did full on gothic phase.

For my last couple years of high school I probably was the most “fashion” I’ve ever been.

Everyday was a statement piece and I really put an effort into my look.

I’ll admit.

I looked pretty fabs.

Tacky?

Yes.

Over-the-top?

Yes.

But it was fun.

In college I discovered you can actually get away with wearing what you wore to sleep all around campus,

So that was my aesthetic the next few years.

Into my early 20s I just wore what seemed sexy.

Then quickly became what I am now a couple years into marriage.

Flannel.

Lots of flannel.

How about you?

I switched schools as a kid somewhat often. One of the schools was for higher income families on average. That was my first frustration about how I was dressing. Later on, I went through different urban styles. Just before sz I was dressing like business casual until sz hitted. I didn’t care anymore. Now I try to dress casual, fitted clothes, usually darker colours.

Too complicated to explain my history. I hate that I can’t express myself with words.

But fashion was a big deal for me until it wasnt.

I did skater jnco and club kid back in the day.

No it was late 90s 2000 phase. I wish I still have them, but no, I think I rather appreciate the new kids wearing them.

Ever watch Greg Arakki movies?

Dang, I don’t even know haha.

I didn’t really care until about 6th grade.

The summer before sixth grade I had got my ears pierced.

I wore “statement” earrings all school year. Giant and over the top!

Plus I had started wearing makeup.

Then in 7th-8th grade I became kind of alternative I think you’d call it…. Which slowly and unfortunately turned into an emo/scene phase…. :sob:

By 10th grade I started wearing very low cut shirts, turtleneck sweaters, stockings and skirts… yoga pants…. Idk, all over the place lol

oh and I had gauged my ears in like 8th/9th grade. Got up to almost an inch. I regret that so much. My earlobes will never be the same…

Nowadays I just wear whatever really… I wouldn’t say I have a specific style.
Middle part hair, natural hair color, no makeup. Hardly ever wear accessories.

I do wear a lot of sweats and black pants tho. I will say that. Hahah and my Fanny pack :tipping_hand_woman:

I can find this picture from my more “fashion” era,

But you can’t see what I’m wearing.

The eyeliner situation is real though.

And it’s not the flash flood lighting out my freckles.

I just wore that much makeup.

Thanks.

One of the few times in my life I didn’t have bangs.

I also remember that being one of my shorter haircuts.

At 10, I realized it mattered. My mom made me wear what was in style but I didn’t like it. She explained to me that if I didn’t look, act, and dress right I’d have no friends.

Later while I was active in a very strict church, I wore long skirts and very modest clothing.

Then I went through a hippie phase.

Now I dress kind of sporty but it’s because those clothes are better for my figure.

But what I really love is the Bohemian style of clothing.

Not necessarily.

Were you an awkward weirdo in high school?

Those were my favorite guys.

My high school boyfriend was by far the nerdiest kid in his school.

And he was like a solid 5" shorter than me.
