Let’s not mention the last thread… threads get locked… it’s just how that goes… that was a bad topic…
However I still feel like chatting.
I want to get better at making more involving threads instead of my typical solipsistic info-dumps.
The car in space is hilarious… what playful nonsense though… I mean it’s kind of offensive… it’s childish and doesn’t maintain the level of seriousness I like my contemplations of space and humanities future wrapped in.
It will garnish a lot of attention though… a neat idea especially for the kiddos…
@anon35453467… I’m assuming your chinese? I’ve been pretty fascinated with china recently… The city Shen Zhen is a particularly interesting place… I buy a lot of tech from them… actually prefer to… I sort of like the difficulty in making totally unsupported products work. I like your name because it reminds me of all that.
@Azley Shenzhen (深圳) is a special economic zone of China. The city borders Hong Kong (香港) which used to be a British colony but now is a special administrative region. Companies such as Apple have manufacturing plants in Shenzhen and majority of the iPhones, iPads & Macs come from there and other Chinese cities. There are videos on YouTube that show how a person can make their own iPhone from spare parts found in Shenzhen. Linux revives unsupported PCs/laptops/tablets. I used to use Ubuntu myself.
How are the factories there? I’ve heard things about bad pay and overwork. I knew an exchange student from china who’s father owned a bunch on sweatshops. He said it was just a part of life there.
Labor is cheap in China because of the huge population. There have been suicides at Foxxcon factories due to hard labor and mistreatment. Usually people in their 20s live in dorms located right beside the factories and build electronic goods. Safety nets have been installed at the factories to prevent workers from committing suicide and now workers are forced to sign legal contracts stating they will not take their lives during their time working at the factories.
The labor force in China is extremely large. 106 million people are living in Guangdong province which is 3 times the size of Canada & California state. I haven’t worked in those factories but am aware of the stories that comes from Shenzhen.
I like to get some apple hardware that hasn’t been security updated… dude they are total nazis… I mean I know iOS is horrible marketplace to just dismiss… but beyond the license to develop on apple software and their certification checks… dude it requires a real investment to get access to that platform.
I plan on doing most of my coding on hacked hardware that doesn’t have the official red tape all over it… and then once I have the software actually good to go I’ll then shell out for the legitimacy because it’s a total risk otherwise and establishes deadlines… and I really don’t like working under those constraints… it bottlenecks creativity…
Neat to think that there are still devices out there that run older more vulnerable firmware…
but all the same I’m already good to go with my droid… and google really has taken a whole lot more of the market share.
Dude yeah sweat shops sound like total ■■■■■■■■… but a lot of what happens on the streets is outside that scope… I like that it’s gritty… It’s like a real live scene from bladerunner.
Anyways… I like their pricepoint… and while their products are just mimickry for a quick buck… they do pack some surprisingly unique features into some of their stuff… and basically all the chips are still straight from intel. That’s where my a/c wifi cards came from… and they were indeed a trick to get working… linux to them like a charm but one of my motherboards kept overlooking the hardware until I found the right boot mode.
yeah… economic exploitation… the west indirectly robbing the rest of the world… totally corrupt.
I mean that’s why I don’t like apple… or one of the reasons… steve jobs was actually a horrible money grubbing bad guy… everyone heralded him… and nothing is worse than the die hard apple crowd… I mean it’s a total ■■■■ show…
I doubt microsoft is clean of that sort of involvement… they have been experimenting with hardware sales for a while now…
I hope that on a cultural level the people’s can adapt and make that life a bit more pleasant… I doubt factory conditions will change, but it might be possible for their standard of living to rise with proper innovation and investment comes to pass.
I mean I live in kansas… dead center of the us… it is cheap here… cheap abundance in the farm land… in the particular town I live in now… everything is huge… cowboy size everything…
I’m glad I don’t own nikes… this topic really reminds me that I need to do more homework on where my stuff comes from… It’s almost always worth the extra cost if it’s to support businesses that actually have respect for their employees and the health of the environment.
that said a good anti-dandruff shampoo isn’t something that can be found at the nature’s grocer…
Reminds me I’m still in a money bind and can’t really get back on top of that.
I had efficient living down a couple years ago… sort of got in over my head with a loan… but I’ll have all that settled in the next 6 months it looks like.
iOS is proprietary software than runs only on Apple hardware unlike Android which is lead by the Open Handset Alliance. It’s quite difficult for hackers to get into supported smartphone operating systems like Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat & Oreo. Usually hackers target Internet servers running Windows Server’s IIS, or Apache Server for Linux.
China is known for its ability to manufacture electronic hardware just as how Japan & Korea are right now. On the software side, East Asian countries are weak because majority of the underlying code is in English.
I wouldn’t say it’s economic exploitation because the engineering design & manufacturing is passed onto China to make their own smartphones such as Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi etc…
You have to understand that the Chinese people who labor in these factories have no education and are migrants from the inner provinces trying to earn money. There is an elite middle and upper class who are wealthy & educated just as how the US is.
I completely agree with you. I have a friend who stopped buying clothes from stores. She either gets them second hand or buys clothes that were made in Canada. She’s also very committed with helping the environment and not buying products tested on animals.
I hope one day I can get to that point too, but at the moment I’m just too broke to be picky. I think Walmart is completely evil and i never want to shop there. Sometimes though I have to just because everything’s cheap. When I’m rich though I’ll buy organic food locally grown.
You mean like typing too much? Join the club I can’t help but write a short novel everytime I post something here.
As far as android being a secure platform… it’s really not… I mean in operation it’s hard to hijack… trying to dial in and take control isn’t going to work… but reflashing the firmware or even finding the source code for android isn’t difficult at all…
It’s pretty simple from there for someone with experience in building software… you don’t even really have to be a programmer to do that… hah actually it is one of the more difficult and frustrating processes of coding… but you don’t actually have to write the code you just have to make sure the environment is set up just right for the build.
But android is just linux… with a java based user interface and a crapload of c++ code tying them together… Developing a familiarity with the linux kernel is pretty much universal… but almost actually not worth changeing at all… because it runs the linux kernel however… you can mangle up whatever software you like on top of it…
But yeah apple being hardware and software means they really get to lock people out…
I liked the memes you brought to us… that’s like a treasure trove… a whole lot of them were unique and I really related to them.
Yeah too broke to be picky… I really do want to commit to veganism… but it’s generally more expensive and the exploration phase takes forever… I’ve sampled a lot of things, but I couldn’t get the recipes right… Not for a full diet…
Now I’m broke and living with my father… and he is very much a steak and potatoes type of guy. Some day though… peanut butter toast will forever be in… I also found that dillon’s brand bread is vegan friendly lol… that’s surprising…
I do actually think the abundant amount of typing is really good exercise… but it’s sort of self centered to expose everyone else to my block texts everywhere… I mean I don’t need that much attention I jsut really am bored.
The only way to hijack an Android smartphone is if the user downloads an app that was designed to access information on the phone. This is one reason why so many apps on Google’s Play store have been taken down.
As for coding, it takes a group of programmers to code in a co-ordinating fashion to build an app let alone an operating system. It took about 2000 programmers to build the kernel for Windows 10.
Linux is free software which is good but doesn’t have the support or popularity of Windows. Linux distributions such as Red Hat & Suse are excellent workstation & server O/S’s that are paid by maintaining the software.
