Last night I thought my lips were a little bit dry. Thought nothing of it. Anyway woke up real thirst and lips were cracking. Have been drinking all day. Apparently this is normal in the ketogenic diet.
Same here today. Chug that water!!!
Have a litre glass jug I keep in the fridge. Must have filled it 3 times.
Same, I’m always thirsty
I’m always thirsty for water too. But I’m not on a ketogenic diet.
Maybe everybody should get blood tests. being thirsty like that could be a sign of high blood sugar/ diabetes.
Well apparently the ketogenic diet is designed to trick your body in acting as if it was deprived of insulin. The thirst is a response to the breaking down of body fats into ketones - exactly what happens in diabetes.
I’ve got two Coleman 2 litre jugs filled with water in my work truck.
I did bloodwork a few months ago. My sugar levels are cool.
Guys, be careful with the ketogenic diet. I know it can be therapeutic for psychiatric issues however there might be longer term dangers. Although it helped me control some IBS symptoms, almost a year of following a ketogenic diet really seemed to mess me up.
One of my minor symptoms was a mysterious rash on different parts of my body which I thought was due to a food intolerance. To my surprise it only disappeared after increasing my carb intake and later I came across other people with the same problem. Google “keto rash”.
I also had occasional night sweats which became more persistent and only stopped, again after eating more carbs. Google “keto night sweats”.
Worst of all, it seems I also developed an auto immune condition.
Here are a link about how eating too few carbs might affect the immune system:
I believe there are benefits to lowering carb intake but a minimum amount is still needed which depends on the person and lifestyle. The ketogenic diet should be approached with extreme caution.
I actually came off the diet. I started getting muscle spasms which I first thought was tar dive dyskinesia but which disappeared upon eating carbs again.
Overall was the hardest diet I have ever been on.
Kind of had a cheat day yesterday. Dealing with digestive upset today. But… Back on the diet. Did some roasts, sliced them, and portioned them. Chopped a bunch of celery, cucumber, peppers, etc., and have bags of those in the fridge. Lots of hard boiled eggs shelled and ready. Another jar of eggs pickling now. Ready for the coming week.
Been doing some more research. Muscle spasms on a low carb diet might be due to too little potassium. Most foods containing potassium are high carb. An exception is the avocado.
@johan, I’ve found the same thing. I’m taking potassium supplements on my diet (which I kind of blew this weekend).
Thinking about going back on the diet. Since coming off it I have gorged on sugary foods. Is not healthy. My sister has done so well on the diet.
