well mom did an ancestry test last summer, and it came back as almost exclusively scotts irish with a little unspecified european. the only thing that has me wondering about this, is my tendency to tan very easily in the summer. also i’ve always faired well in the summer heat and humidity. i had a couple irish friends growing up and they couldn’t get out in the sun much each summer. one of them tried to play baseball with me when we were in middle school, but he had to quit because he was burning in the summer heat after a couple hours. so im wondering if i have a bit of mediterranean ancestry or something that allows me to tolerate the sun. im not very familiar with european peoples or the climates so i honestly don’t know. is it typical for a lot of european people to tan easily in the summer?
Yes Northern European people have different skin colors, from pale and pinkish to more light yellow/brown. They don’t look extremely different, but people with the paler and pinkish skin tend to get sunburns a lot easier. My mom is one of those and she also gets more reddish brown when she tans. I have the more light brownish/yellow type and don’t burn as easily. I will typically only get sunburns in early summer if I forget to use sunscreen. When I tan I become brown without a reddish tint, and I become tan a lot quicker than her.
oh ok. now i think it’s probably accurate. just looking at my arms now where i have a bit of a tan and im noticing a hint of redness. after a week in the sun, it goes away. was just looking at dad, earlier and his arms are really dark from being out in the sun. here is a picture of me last summer, i think i see a hint of redness. i didn’t spend much time in the sun last summer, as i was being lazy sitting on the couch each day.
You could always get a DNA test. They’re not super expensive. But you don’t seem unusually dark to me
I think the Scotts Irish is the dominant strain out of several in my genetic makeup. I’m also German and Chickasaw Indian. I think the rest is Anglo. Both my mother and my father were born with English names.
yeah im not that dark in that picture, like i said, i spent most of last summer inside in the air conditioning. i used to get a little darker when i was a kid going to the community pool everyday. i think mom’s results are probably accurate. i was just wondering because a couple of my irish friends would get 2nd or 3rd degree burns if they were out in the sun too long. so was wondering if i had a bit of mediteranean or something that allowed me to get out in the sun.
edit. maybe not 3rd degree burns, i think that is more severe than i was thinking, but they burn very easily in the sun
Yeah, that’s a completely standard skin color here. Of course, you’ll find lots of people about as light-skinned as that in Spain and Italy as well, and Europe is a relatively small space with a lot of people and a lot of travelling, so it’s perfectly possible that you have some Southern European genes too.
About my ancestry, according to MyHeritage.com, I’m 70% European, 20% Latino American, 5% Native American, and 5% Middle Eastern.
I tan way too easily. I try to stay out of the sun. But the sun follows me.
I get that. I think you should do Ancestry DNA. They’re less expensive than the other one
This might be left field but didn’t Ireland pick up a lot of color from the Spanish Armada that got taken out over there? From what I understood was that a lot of that Spanish got assimilated to the locals. I may be wrong but I’ve met fair and tanned Irish people…
I think there is a link between the Mediterranean peeps because of the failed Armada.
