John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln even though his plan for rebuilding the South after the civil war was based on the idea of reconciliation and healing. After his death the next president and the congress made up their own plan based on the idea of punishing the south. 
My opinion is that everyone would have been better off separating the races back to Africa with a good send off in return for the experience.
