Why don’t occupational therapists help you find an occupation?

I used to really want to go to an occupational therapist to help myself find a job and be able to perform better at work with my illness until I found out occupational therapists don’t help people get an occupation. There really should be therapists or social workers that help mentally ill and disabled people find work

Occupational therapists help with life skills and such. Vocational rehabilitation centers help with finding jobs. There might be one near you. Your local unemployment center might have more information for you.

I had no idea that existed, I’m somewhat looking for a job so this is helpful, thanks!

I went through vocational rehabilitation many years ago. They did an extensive interview and then let me work in their workshop while also teaching things like how to go to an interview and basic computer stuff. It was a pretty cool thing. I can’t remember where I went to work after that but I don’t think they got me the job, I think I found it on my own.

So it was more training for work rather than rehabilitation? I’ve been thinking about going through a temp agency

That’s what it was for me. I think they tailor the program to what you need though. It might be beneficial to talk to them and see what they offer.

In my state, the unemployment office is for finding jobs, and the vocational rehabilitation center is for getting training on how to be successful at a job.

I had OT recently and they did help me find work in my sessions, in fact that was the main thing we were focusing on.

I’ve just been having some subtle symptoms that might’ve been exacerbated in September. I’m not feeling as functional as I feel like I should, I just want someone with maybe a background in counseling or psych or whatever who might be able to prepare me to work

Any specific kind of OT? I thought they usually just help with lifestyle complaints

No, it was just your standard OT. Can you ask your mental health team? We get help with this in the UK if we ask for it. I am not sure what it is like in your area.

I just have one psychiatrist, he might have people to recommend. Maybe I’ll ask and see what he says
