Why do I struggle with math?

Since I had my break and was put on meds I struggle with the simplest of calculations.

They say math is a language to be learnt. To me math is not anything near a language.

I want my ability to do math back again. For me math was something creative.

I’m probably going to join a math course next semester. But I will probably fail because my brain doesn’t work. It’s embarrassing feeling this stupid.

I won every math competition until my 16 yrs.
Now I practice only arithmetic in head, and it’s not simple…
@Speedy,don’t be disappointed if you fail at first…

I’m in the same boat but I was never good at math. I started to understand a few years ago but that was before meds … I’m also gonna take a full math course beginning 2025

I struggle sometimes with my hobbies because they require math… Alot of feeling stupid

I started feeling dumb in math after i had ECT. I used to be able to do it in my head but now i have to write it down. I also forget people’s names.

Maths is practice in my opinion, give it a go if it’s affordable - you’ll probably surprise yourself

In degree level maths. First year, I’ve averaged between 50 and 60% but by the time I got to second tier stuff I would drop to the 40s and 50s.

The difference was that I was more practiced in first years maths given half of it is in the A Level syllabus

If doing math in your head has become imposible, go back to the basics. Pen and paper: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc. Linear one-variable equation. Fractions. Exponentials.
Different areas of the brain are used for language and math. They’re not the same thing.

I struggle with programming and problem solving in general on meds, they slow down thinking speed and also depth of thinking, so you use much longer time to solve something you would normally solve pretty fast. Maybe also brain damage from psychosis plays into it.

Did you hear anything back from your request to social security about part-time study @Speedy ?

I sent them an email and they wanted me to contact a case worker. I’ll do that. There’s no rush though, school starts next year.

I’m decent at math. Not as good as I used to be, but still pretty good.
