…Im just wondering…coz really Im just watching a show on tv in Ireland on American teens where you see kids wear shoulder pads that are absolutely huge compared to their real shoulder size. Like honestly if you wanted protection for your shoulders wouldn’t you use more comfortable shoulder pads.
“The uniform is designed for safety, but it also serves to make players look intimidating to the opponent.”
The shoulders are one of the parts of the body that takes a lot of physical abuse during a game. If you notice, when the players tackle or block each other they lead with their shoulders. Thus the big pads.
If you look at old films of football games the pads were minimal and different than today. I’m talking 1930’s or 40’s.In fact when professional football first started the players did not even wear face masks!! And their helmets were made of leather.
The shoulder pads and helmets not only protect the players, but they also allow them to use their bodies as weapons.
Yeah, that was kind of my point too.
to rest their ego’s on.
