Why did my psychiatrist ask about drug and alcohol use?

Im afraid of taking drugs and I only drink once or twice a week and maybe one or two cocktails at that…

Drugs and alcohol can cause issues like psychosis in themselves as well as increase symptoms. It’s important for the doctor to know where your at to get an idea if those things are affecting you or causing the symptoms in themselves!

they always ask, alcohol usually isnt much of a problem for most people unless ur addicted to it and interaction with meds, drugs can many more effects on sz and more people with sz have drug problems than normal people

Part of the reason is that the doctors want to know how to treat your disease and how to help you. And drug use is something that could hinder your progress. So they need to know what they are dealing with.

Treatment purposes! Like the others have said, drugs and alcohol can affect the way the meds take to your body as well as increase symptoms in some. They just want to make sure you’re not doing anything that could make progress more difficult.

Before they would potentially start a controlled / addictive medication, they want to assess your addictive behaviors, and see if you’ve been self-medicating illicitly. It is not an automatic that your doctor doesn’t trust you or believe you. It is ostensibly for mutual protection.
