Anyone live in a group home and how much of your ssi is taken for rent? I am paranoid lately that my wife is going to get rid of me. Also can u live in a group home with felony convictions for drugs?
Where I live, you have to turn your SSI over to a payee if you move into a group home and you get an allowance. You cannot own a vehicle or have a felony record to live there, but there are homes specific for drug offenders versus just having a mental illness. Here, you have to either have a job or attend a day program. The rules vary a lot by who sponsors the group home and what state you’re in.
I’m guessing it depends on the individual group home and their policy on who they allow or not. The few group homes I stayed in California were all different. It wasn’t like a “chain” of group homes, like they have restaurant chains (though they might exist).
Each individual group home I lived in had similarities and differences. Rules could be vastly different in each group home. That said, I met quite a few people in the homes who had been in jail or prison.
I remember one particular guy in a home who had beat a guy to death (before he was in the home) with a 2 X 4 for disrespecting his friends girlfriend. He was about 22 years old and spent two years in prison for the death. He only served 2 years probably because it was a crime off passion and other extenuating circumstances. Me and him were on good terms, nice guy, we used to talk all the time.
So being in jail or prison doesn’t necessarily preclude you from living in a group home, but certain group homes may screen their potential clients for violence and drug convictions.
When I lived in one for 5 years in the 90’s I was working and collecting benefits and the owners charged me my whole check for rent. Every time my benefits went up they raised the rent to match what I was receiving.
