I volunteer by visiting a nearby nursing home once a week for an hour and I do mercy visits. Meaning I go around the nursing home just chit chatting with random residents that I meet. I enjoy this very much and I get to meet a lot of friendly people. All of these people are either very elderly and/or very sick and lonely so I am doing a good service for them. The activities director told me that me and the other volunteers from my church are “worth our weight in gold”. That sure made me feel good.
I would just like for there to be some positive examples of people doing well (working, having a family, etc.) for the newly diagnosed. It’s a depressing diagnosis and it’s bad enough to discover you’re losing your mind, but the system often takes your hope for the future as well.
There is PLENTY of hope and newbies need to know that.
People tell me I help them or inspire them and give them hope. So I give support and I will just keep doing what I’m doing. I’m also here for the free lunch.
I come to the forum in different moods at diff times. I’m usually most in the mood to jump in and help after 10pm my time, for some reason. During the day, I might be the one needing help. I’m always ready for camaraderie that this site affords.
I voted all but make friends. I cannot do that online or in the real world, so I don’t put any effort into it, which my understanding is required to make friends is that it all seems one-sided, so I leave it to people to contact me so I can be sure they’re genuinely interested in me.
I have gotten used to some of the profiles on here, but that’s as far as it goes. The conversations are generally much more supportive here than other places on the internet that are just full of hate.
