I had an Indian friend in university named Nava, I think its short for Navaneethan. He helped me a lot in my studies.

It’s not to be honest i got bullied for it. My partner is the surname you mentioned so I pick this. And then my whole name isn’t uncommon anymore.

I had another Indian friend and Patel was his family name. He said Patel family name is too popular.

oh wait i mistaken i thought it said first name. for surname id say razim or rahim. idk how common it is but its the first that comes to mind

I still think it’s quite a common surname in India. Like Singh is considered a Sikh surname of Punjabis but a lot of Sikhs are Indian.

I’ve seen quite a few Patels in the US. Some of the Indian businessmen I’m acquainted with use an americanized nickname that is similar to their real name, or go by their initials.
