What Is Drug-Induced Schizophrenia?

“A growing body of research suggests that substance use doesn’t create mental health conditions such as schizophrenia — underlying causes are likely present.”

Supports what I have said for a long time. That substance abuse is usually just a trigger for those with the predisposition for sz.

My brother developed amphetamine psychosis after 12 years of Adderall abuse. Obviously I’m not a doctor but his behavior was far and beyond more extreme than anyone I’ve known or known about, to the point where he had to be non-voluntarily committed. He’s out now but closely monitored.

Doesnt schizophrenia develop while the brain is still forming in utero?

I have a feeling that this is true, we are born with a broken dopamine system.

Sure drugs can induce psychosis like symptoms. But once you come down it goes away. To even be diagnosed w SZ you have to have symptoms for at least 6 mos.

A person using can’t be diagnosed while using. They would be diagnosed with substance use disorder if anything.
