What do you think of someone who steals, not for survival but for greed?

There is this guy at the assisted living center where I live who seems to think the whole world owes him its property. He gets money from home, so he is richer than most of the people in our program. He had things stolen from him once, so now he thinks he has the right to steal from everyone else. It is one thing to steal necessities for survival, but it is completely different to steal out of greed.

Yeah stealing wrong m’kay. If you think that he has stolen something I guess you can either confront him or inform the authorities. I would usually go with confronting him first because it is like a chain of command kind of thing. Give him the ability to say if he did or not.

I feel an impulse to beat the ■■■■ out of him, but he might have friends, and he makes me mad enough that I might really hurt him if we got in a fight. I don’t need any assault charges against me. I guess the thing to do is catch him in the act.

I think… the crime is the punishment. Nothing more than that.

You could always try to talk to him. I guess you could try to catch him if you really think he is doing something. I don’t know is something like that something they would search his abode for? Also don’t assault him that seems like it would end badly.

You’ve obviously had nothing that you valued stolen from you. It’s the principle of the thing that gets me. I’ve donated $300.00 to different charities last month, so I don’t hate this guy out of greed. I hate him because of his attitude. He thinks the whole world owes him its property.

please don’t attack him, that would only mean he won. I hope you catch him stealing…maybe you could report him to the powers that be where you live?

I understand that. I’ve had lots of stuff stolen from me from my older brother. Just recently he stole 2 PS4s (one was my brothers). There’s been much more that he’s stolen.

But the idea of wanting to “exact” revenge through any means just means it is you who is already lost.

“You will not be punished for your anger but by your anger.” - Siddhartha Gautama

Justice isn’t in putting others behind bars, but in restoring what was lost. It would be ideal if you can get what is stolen returned to you but that isn’t always possible.

But what has the criminal lost? The only means of Justice would be if he were rehabilitated.

As far as hating someone. All it does is add to your own stress.

Maybe. I just felt a spike of anger towards the guy. That would probably be the best way to handle it.

Morally I can’t see much difference between a person who steals from a house out of greed and a business owner who underpays his employees to maximise his profits. Both are reprehensible people.

They can take a cactus up the ass. Someone stole my debit card number recently and spent nearly 1000$ on restaurants, Apple Store stuff, etc. Left me with no money for food or rent. I hope whatever thoughtless and selfish person did that goes to jail.

I hate thieves. That’s all there is to it. Kids need to learn to earn what they get, adults need to pay for what they take.

Stealing is only fun when it is in a video game. Whenever I play The Elder Scrolls games I usually become a thief. Games like Morrowind, I like to play the thief and sneak around.

I don’t like stealing in real life though.

I have been stolen from numerous times in my life. I suppose people feel entitled or maybe they think you have enough stuff that you can spare it. People are not raised to believe that stealing is always wrong, every time. The worst time was when someone I trusted stole my identity and robbed me blind. No BS. and this was someone I trusted not to hurt me. He is in prison where he belongs because he stole from many people. The law needs to take crimes of theft very seriously. It does a lot of damage. I guess if I were you I would try to catch him and then tell the proper people. I am very sorry you are dealing with this.

Known a few kleptomaniacs in my time unsure how to help them.

I can forgive stealing if it is something like someone stealing formula to feed their baby, but of course many people use that kind of excuse as a cover up for stealing for pleasure.

I’m stealing that, cactus up the ass, priceless.

one time I was in a homeless shelter. I never showered there. don’t ask where I showered…

but this guy offered to give me some really good clothes. and was surprised. I accepted the clothes and took a shower in the shelter. after the shower, I noticed that I didn’t have my learner’s permit in my pocket, which was my only ID. I also couldn’t find my library card.

If I ever stay in a homeless shelter again, I’m not carrying anything with me.
