What do you think about this?

I was laying on the floor watching tv, and four policemen walked into my mother’s house. I had been calm all day. When the police came into our den I said I wanted to know what legal basis they had for taking me to the mental hospital. If it had been anyone else the police would have said that they couldn’t arrest that person because there wasn’t cause for any concern about them at the moment. Actually, the mental health professionals probably do stretch the rules considerably, and they get about the same outcome as if they were going by the book.

I don’t understand what you want to hear…were you delusional at the time?

I was a little, but I wasn’t about to go out and start shouting at people, or something like that. I wish that I had just gone out to look for a job and not mooched off my mother. We had differing views of my treatment schedule.

I did kind of contradict myself in what I wrote. My mind does that to me sometimes.

Thanks. Right now I’m kind of down, so I need the encouragement.

sorry to hear that bro…situational depression or mood down because you’re ill?

I go through phases. I don’t think I am liked by a lot of people right now. I wouldn’t worry about it, but some of the people are relatives, so that gives me some disquiet.

I think it’s a bad idea to lip off a group of cops.

Maybe they were just doing what they thought was best. Sometimes it’s better to go to the hospital.

You’re right. One time I was walking past a couple of cops, and one of them said, “Hey! George.” I turned and yelled at them “Tom! My name is Tom!” They sprayed me with pepper spray, handcuffed me, slammed me face first onto the ground, and then put their knees on the back of my head and ground my face into the dirt after I had been pepper sprayed. It hurt like hell. It’s just common decency to call a person by the name they want to be called.

You just got to play the game, no matter how stupid it is.

Oh my god, that is so disturbing that they used physical force, you been unarmed. It must be very stressful for you. Its so sad these officers didn’t know better doing their job. I hope you recover from this trauma added to your life.

Thank you for your concern. I was kind of dazed for a couple of weeks after this, but I don’t think there was lasting damage. But when you’ve got the police after you it is pretty scary. Like my former AA sponser once said, “It is so scary being an alcoholic while you are trying to bring legal action against the police.” You notice police cars everywhere, and if they are not following you, you think they are." They can’t do this as much now as they used to, but if the police want to they can terrorize a person pretty good. If you’re sitting in the back of a patrol car in handcuffs you realize there is very little that could stop them from driving into some dark alley and beating you within an inch of your life. A lot of that kind of thing is mostly imagined fear. Generally speaking, if you’re white and you don’t give the police too hard of a time they won’t hurt you. But one time I saw on tv where this white cop had pulled over a black guy for a traffic violation. The cop made the black guy get down on his knees. Then he tried to make the black guy lay down face first in the mud. I’ve had a cop do that to me too, and it is very hard to get yourself to lay face down in the mud. But this black guy couldn’t do it. He stood back up and started fighting the policeman. Another cop car came, and they eventually shot the black guy in the leg. As much as it sucks, you just have to do what the cops tell you when they arrest you no matter how degrading it is, because now this black guy could be looking at a felony charge. I hope they didn’t bring felony charges against him. I imagine a lot would have to do with his record, like if he had any history of bothering people or provoking the police. The police should not do things like that. It costs the taxpayer a lot of money to process something like that in the legal system. It’s a waste of the black guy’s time and our money.

Sorry for being so brusque. The more tired I am, the more clipped my speech becomes. Apologies again for that.

That’s what I have been telling other people about their interactions with the cops. You just have to go with the flow.
