What do you think about the proposal for a psychosis spectrum disorder as opposed to schizophrenia?

It is just a label. Whether it is this label or that label, it doesn’t really matter. As long as I can get my symptoms treated and not be over stigmatized, that would be good. Perhaps it will help to call it a spectrum though. this way people know that there are worse and less bad symptoms just like for autism.

Well, in the past there were only psychosis and neurosis.

I think it would be good if there was a ‘schizo’ spectrum disorder because the schizo disorders have many similar symptoms, common causes, vulnerabilities and biological abnormalities.

A rose by another other name…

I like the idea. I would be interested to find out where I fall on the spectrum. I think I would be considered very mild. It’s so frightening to know that there are people dealing with so much worse symptoms. And they just walk amongst us with very little help considering what they are up against. I feel for those that don’t have the resources or capability to do something so simple as to get involved with the peer-to peer counseling on this site. But that’s a whole other thread isn’t it?

I think psychosis spectrum will develop a bad reputation and stigma attached to it just like bipolar did. I don’t think changing names does one bit of good.

Maybe if this becomes psychosisspectrumdisorder.com then the bloody bi-polars (non-psychotic) will stop clogging up the works here and actually go to the existing bi-polar communities instead. I could totally get behind that.

You got a definite point there @shutterbug.

I wonder if MISD would work out? Mental Illness Spectrum Disorder. Maybe removing barriers and insurance labels might ease the stigmatizm.

Where would the schizoaffective people fit? You have pure schizophrenia on one end and psychosis on the other. Do you just put sza and the other mi with psychotic features on the psychosis end? That wouldn’t really be a spectrum that would be more like “us and them”
