What do DJs at dance venues do nowadays?

Surely they just press “play” :play_or_pause_button: on the PC with all the music.

Traditionally they had to swap vinyl records etc etc.

I’m not buying what’s going in this photograph

Don’t know.

It’s been many years since I’ve attended a DJ’s set.

I also wanna know what they do, I’ve never quite understood. Maybe they have access to a DAW file and can tweak parameters while its playing?

I think @lekkerhondje will be able to answer your question!

it’s not just pushing play as you have to mix it at the right times and you put together tunes that make them even better together. It used to be more complex when still playing vinyl but it’s a lot more than just pushing play.

and you also gotta tweak the bass levels a lot. can’t play 2 basslines over each other. so you use the bass of 1 tune usually

Beat mixing with vinyl was quite involved, actually. DJing today is just as technically challenging because the expectations of audiences have increased with the level of technology available. DJs are mashing up multiple tracks and creating new music on the fly.

Yeah, the expectation is a live performance, so that is what they get. I mean, sure, they COULD just pre-record the track, the same way a band could play a pre-recorded track and just mime with their instruments and lip-synch. People go to a live performance for live music, though, and performers hold live events to play live.

What do any music artist do nowadays? No write their own songs, do their own choreography, they don’t dress themselves, they have almost no say in who they are. I read about how most artist are more recruited and cast as a personality and fashion. Finding someone sort of cute maybe some singing is very easy. A few get very famous. they are still paying the monster that made them.

Oh blah. Lots of artists are using the Internet to make themselves known, writing their own music and doing their own thing.

Record companies are losing their role as gatekeepers.

True yea if you’re actually djing it’s still a difficult job I think. I heard from deadmau5 that a lot of the big festivals and stuff don’t allow for live performances really and they do pre-recorded sets. He said they mostly just Twittle knobs on stage when that is the case. Again not bashing DJs just saying huge shows like lost lands and stuff I heard the standard is pre-recorded sets.

Lol I love that meme. Technically that’s what a producer does but let’s not split hairs :sunglasses:

Artist with true talents still are there. They are not heard by the masses like the produced ones. You have to find them.
