Is this song about mental illness??
I don’t think so.
It struck me as a personal reflective ballad saying “Im fine. Im not in the big time, but that doesn’t mean I’m doing bad”. I kinda see it as about coping without being in the Beatles. But I mean you could see it into a perspective into John’s personal well being too I suppose. But he’s kind of defying people’s concerns for him (in the song).
“When I tell them that I’m doin’ fine
Watchin’ shadows on the wall
Don’t you miss the big time, boy?
You’re no longer on the ball”
Watching the wheels to me is more about accepting what you are doing, even if its less than people expect.
Have you listened to Plastic Ono Band (album)? That stuff is definitely Lennon letting his demons do the talking.
No. Never heard of it.
I agree with most of what you say.
I think Lennon himself kind of said that he’s saying to his fans, “Hey, I went through some personal problems, I dropped out of the limelight to raise my son but I’m back and I”m more mature and I’m doing good.” That’s what the whole album as a whole seems to be about.
