Visited my mom today

For any not caught up, memorial day weekend my mom had a bad fall due to drinking and developed 2 brain bleeds. The last time I saw her she was in the ICU unresponsive and doctors projected she would be on some form of life support forever/never be conscious again/basically told us she was brain dead.

Today I visited her at the physical rehab facility she was transferred to recently. She is responsive now, just has no short term memory and can’t hold a conversation. She mostly mumbles to herself. She can answer simple questions like “how are you” and “are you thirsty” but anything requiring thought she pretty much can’t respond to. She has to have a person sitting in there with her all the time bc she will try to get out of bed and she still can’t really walk , but she’s working on it there. She is totally off all life support and is eating again and breathing on her own.

Basically she is already far surpassed what doctors projected for her. She has come so far in just a matter of weeks, I really hope she continues to progress at the same rate. I am trying to be positive and just take things one day at a time.

I was in a wicked depressive episode for a while and just couldn’t do visits to her. I’m glad I went today and saw how much she’s improved. I know it’s good news but it’s still jarring seeing my mom in that state so I am somewhat shaken and trying to decompress now.

Summary: my mom has already recovered beyond what doctors said she would from her fall. She is still very confused and out of it but she is responsive now and can communicate and doesn’t need any life support so that’s amazing progress.
