Any one go vegan and why. I have started reading about buddhism and how it can liberate us from suffering and our desires etc and think that I will end up vegan soon.

I can’t say of religion, lest :triangular_flag_on_post:s

Original buddhism doesn’t really fit into religion or philosophy some have made it into one over time though

There are many schools of Buddhism and many of the monks actually do eat meat when it is offered to them in alms. The Dalai Lama ate some meat also due to a pre-existing medical condition that affected his blood red cells. It is felt that if you can avoid harm then do so, but if it is a medical necessity then it is acceptable, like for me with sz taking medication that has been tested on animals or fish oil as a supplement is totally fine and acceptable in Buddhism.

It is also worthy to note that we are all on our own path towards enlightenment and that although we may be at different stages, it is necessary to note that we must test our own faith as to what is acceptable to you and not accept anything as ‘truth’ unless it makes sense to you.

This is from some of the Buddha’s teachings:

“Now, Kalamas, don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative is our teacher.’ When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ — then you should enter & remain in them.”

The fundamental points of Buddhism are the four noble truths and that is where to begin when it comes to beginning the path to enlightenment. Life is suffering being the first one…

I was vegan for 3 years. I now eat meat again. I was hoping going vegan would help my schizophrenia, but yeh, it did nothing.

I love a good beef burger with cheese, and I must admit I love eggs and milk and bacon and king size prawns. And I love a good BBQ get-together.

I respect vegans. I love animals just as much as anyone else, but I just love the taste of meat.

When I was vegan I hated soy milk and them weird cheeses. I used to think meat was the devils food, but now I don’t think twice about eating meat… I just eat it and enjoy it.

Being vegan was ruling my life. I had to check all food labels and research hundreds of weird names just to check if it was vegan or not. It was aweful, thinking about it and looking back on it now.

I’m vegan, but not a Buddhist. For me it’s a philosophical. I haven’t read any good arguments for eating meat, not even one. I have never even heard good arguments saying why eating animals is less reprehensible than humans. I have heard a couple of arguments that make sense to me that defend the position that it’s better to eat humans than animals. Eating animals is just bigoted. The human race has been full of ■■■■ for a long time, it doesn’t matter to me that most people eat meat.

As a kid, when I heard about how different lives humans used to live in the past, it instantly occurred to me that we are a part of history. And just like the people in the past who were burning witches, owning slaves, not letting women vote etc; most of whom thought they not only had the right but the obligation to do such thing; we are doing similar and often even worse things, torturing animals is one of them. When it occurred to me, I started to look around me, and saw the same arrogance, ignorance and self-righteousness of the people from the past, from everybody around me, all the while putting no research and not even contemplation into their worldview. In 100 years, if we haven’t blown ourselves up nor made the planet a real crap hole(which I think is more likely than not), people are going to look back at torturing animals as more reprehensible than those 3 things I mentioned earlier combined.

I’m a vegetarian, but not a vegan. It’s a health thing for me. Whenever I ate meat, I would throw up. So I stopped eating it.

I’m also a vegetarian. I wish I could be vegan but I feel like it takes too much work. It’s easy to be a vegetarian though. Just don’t eat meat!

I’m the opposite of a vegetarian, I don’t eat any vegetables.

If I had my own cows and chicken I would have dairy and probably eggs but seeing how they treat the cows to produce more milk by forcefully impregnating them and then having the baby cow ripped away from its mother so we can have its milk and sticking hormones in chickens to produce more eggs etc is pretty sad most people don’t see this I’m freeing myself from my desire to support such things same goes with bad things that happen to people I’m working on it looking at going totally vegan diet from tues.

Anyone see the movies earthlings and unity? I am planning to see them in the future

I was the same.

Just a reminder to everyone that if this gets too political, I’ll have to shut it down.

I like buddhism taoism teaching and this whole week while I was alone - I was 99% vegetarian - just had some cheese? almost vegan. If I put effort I can totally be vegan but it is also very crucial for mentally ill to eat a very balanced diet. I took B12 and Iron supplements for like 6 months once

I notice even like when I get the flu I get completely delusional.
