The biggest problem seems to be that not everyone is getting vaccinated and the virus can mutate in unvaccinated people then become more effective against vaccinated people.

From what I understand, humans have eradicated diseases before but it requires mass (worldwide at this point) inoculation to do so.

Not sure if this is possible given how rapidly COVID responds to vaccine pressure.
