The exercise dilemma

Exercise may be good for you but for me it boils down to finding something I’m comfortable with, ie not too physically complex.

That leaves walking and swimming. With walking I have a limited area I’ll walk in . Longest distance is just under 1000 steps there and back. It’s the walk to the cafe where I’ll have something to eat and drink so I’m probably piling on more from food than I’m taking off via exercise.

I’ve tried doing the active 10 x3 (1000 steps in 10 minutes) by pacing indoors and it’s as mind numbingly boring as can be.

That leaves swimming. I’d need someone to take me to the swimming baths . It’s not something I can just up and do.

I used to have an exercise bike but got disillusioned with that when I was putting on weight using it rather than losing.
Have considered a simple step machine but am clueless as to what to buy.

I don’t exercise either. Maybe if you put on headphones and listened to music while you were walking indoors it might help.

I learned in my classes

that these are non aerobic exercises

you’d think it’d be opposite, but it’s not

distance is aerobic

my grandmother was always thin
and I think it’s because she was a clean freak

never saw her sit down, unless we’d play a game together.

Good idea. Though no headphones and no music gadget.

I find it difficult to exercise as well.
I don’t like to walk so much, but I do most of my walking indoors.

I have a treadmill but I find them to be incredibly boring.

I don’t like to walk outside because of my paranoia and anxiety.

I really want to do exercise. I used to do climbing perhaps once or twice a week and also dancing for a while. Those were things I enjoyed. Also did running for a while to train for alpine climbing. Wouldnt really need exercise in the past to stay thin and fit.

Right now I am out of shape and really want to restart exercising, but I just can’t get myself to do it. I do bicycle to work, my son’s school, my parents, etc because I don’t own a car, but it’s tiny distances. Perhaps I should buy a nice bike and do longer distances, that I kind of like.

Wondering whether you can get a small dab radio with earphones. Don’t have the music to put things on something like an Ipod.

That sucks. For me it’s the fear of getting lost and trapped.

My grandma was a thin, clean freak who never sat down too.

What about one of the mini exercise bikes you can fit under a desk or in front of the couch? or a Mini stepper?

If you were in the U.S. I’d mail you my mini-stepper.

I like a recumbent bike for exercise. It’s comfortable to sit on, and you can put a TV or computer in front of it to make the time pass more quickly.

I bike for about a half hour every day and burn maybe 200 calories, but it’s more for improving circulation and gaining leg strength than weight loss. I believe major weight loss comes from changing what you eat (for instance, favouring high-testosterone and estrogen blocking foods.)

I used to love this fan propelled stationary bike

at the Fitness Center

it was one speed, and I didn’t have to figure out how to get it started

and stay on. Plus I loved the air on my face.

When I talked of a stepper on another forum someone started talking about big ellipticals /stair climbers. No way could I make room for one of them . Certainly a mini stepper would be more in line with what I was thinking of.

High testosterone fires up a person’s metabolism though, it makes weight loss much easier. Estrogen does the reverse, making weight gain easier, and makes a person more fatigued.

Might not be a good idea for women though, and if you are one then maybe that’s not the best advice.

Trust me I’m a doctor’ program highlighted how taking a tai chi class was equivalent to a zumba class. Tai chi is a gentle and slow paced exercise compared to the hectic high intensity zumba, but yet had the same results after a 12 week course.

I want to take up Tai Chi, but the dvd I bought was a waste of money as the commentary was opposite to the action on the screen and for a complete beginner that makes it unworkable.

If you get out then a tai chi class is what I would recommend as science compares the results as the same as a high intensity workout.
