yesterday was not a good day…
I kept getting a faint smell of buring wires but I couldn’t tell if it was real no one else said anything so I had no cues and could find no source… it was my cell phone… battery is cheap and has been dysfunctional for a couple of weeks… it was plugged in and got so hot it melted then cracked the charging port and case around it… so phones screwed…
went to turn on the tv for the little one to play games…the lights come on…pure black sceen… so I turn off the lights grab a flash light and I can see the tvs picture… so the led backlight is out… open it up check all I could think to check down to testing the individual led lights… not the lights not the wires connecting the lights…damnit its the board and not just oh this is lose…no I need individual part replacement…check prices on parted out tv boards…might as well buy a new tv…so I throw it away…tears for my 50 inch… and pull the dinosaur sanyo out that has no godam input button and no remote …so I cant even use anything other than the aux cable input… then I remembered I forgot to clean up after I got the tvs insulation all over my hands…fml…still picking that crap outa my hands…
and thirdly…was on the laptop trying to fill out someones tax return…it doesn’t ask to update it just randomly starts initiating it… I wait…stuck at 1% for 20+ mins…shut it down black screen then looped welcome screen doesn’t go any further…shut it down again enter safety mode…viruses in everything…couldn’t get rid of one before 2 more popped up… very aggressive and sneaky… abandoned the useless I get 1 step forward they get 2 kicks to my face …searching for whats starting up all the grabby viruses…found you asshat…bastarde was hiding in Norton antivirus…couldn’t close it down couldn’t suspend it did not have the authority to remove it… at a loss… wipe and reinstall windows…took a nap… guess what clung on to the auto installing Norton…stuck again…then magic its too simple… windows button + r … type appwiz.cpl …ha like a god send got rid of the source… cleaned up its mess… atleast I could save the laptop… this was atleast 4 hours time…couldn’t use the internet the viruses nulled my ability to do much…
so despite losing phone…tv… having a generally shite day…I still managed to beat the ■■■■ out of a badass virus and save the laptop… it runs like new…lol sorry for rant needed to vent on my triple cursed weds afternoon/night…
I don’t think ive ever had so many items I use daily just fail back to back before… and kinda important ones… no phone im home with my 2 year old all day… my gfs best friend bf and his dad live next door so worst case I can go over there… but still if I need medical attention asap I may not make it that far… heart has been beating very fast since the dentists… all 3 numbers were high something like 150 120/80 …I know the first numbers right but only half think the next two are correct… has been checked 3 times since the dentist all about the same…
oh yea…the usb plug on the charger has a real thick heavy duty rubber part by the end that was warm… I touched the metal plug part and it was one of the hotter things ive touched in recent memory lol… but I popped the back off and tossed the hot battery outside until everything cooled off…
did ok… frustration, pain and loss from failure to save the tv and phone and forgetting to wear gloves forced me to focus on saving the laptop… did not come out on top but feel good about the laptop…
I think it’s amazing you knew what to do in all three situations. I would have been in a tizz over the first one and by the third I would have just thrown my hands up in the air and put my head in the freezer.
phone was protective instinct…it was very hot… ive seen the batteries fail hard… tv I knew some but had to look up how to do the rest…and laptop seemed harder than it actually was due to the way the virus acted… didn’t need to wipe and reinstall windows but it runs better so whatever lol… hows life been?
Pretty good, thanks for asking. I’m increasing my work hours by one more day a fortnight. So now I’ll be working a 7 day fortnight. Starting next Monday. And the best bit is that after next monday, my next monday on is a public holiday so I get paid not to go to work! Woohoo!
How has life been for you, other than the curse of 3?
tv hardware diagnostic is a pain 50 screws of varying sizes to get to the led back lights and god help you if you tear any of those connecting strips between the screen and the hardware the white parchment inbetween the screen and bulbs is insulation just fyi and electronic insulation is more painful than industrial its tiny… I enjoy software malfunctions much more…
yeah, my sis’s laptop broke. did research. turned out that backlight was dead, as I could still see the screen if I squinted really hard or flashed a flashlight on it.
needed special custom part to replace it. didn’t bother.
Sorry you had such a crap day, @flameoftherhine. Good job handling it, though. I doubt I would’ve handled things as well as you did. Hope things turn around quickly for you.
task manager and resource manager are very helpful… a lot of viruses have sneaky names but bouncing amounts of cp and memory usage is a decent indicator… makes the program harder to notice and click on sometimes lol… how I found out it was hiding in Norton hogging all my resources then dropping down to none back and forth making the comp lag and hard to use but giving itself away…
At least you were able to put your nerd superpowers to good use.
