The application for a dog has opened

I really am tempted to apply to see where it goes. But I’m thinking maybe it’s better to just get a havapoo instead or a cavapoo :sob: I can train them and I won’t have to return the dog… I will wait a few years. Of course getting a rescue pup is also something to consider.

Havapoo is an actual dog breed.

you could be a good dog parent.

spend lots of time with them, for me, 24 / 7.

I train my dogs and they are really well behaved. they have to be as i registered them as service dogs.

I’m not sure I can do that here but I can do some research. The place I was considering does give you a dog but you have to give the dog back.

idk, if considering having to return a dog based off breed then its probably not the right time to consider getting one, its not like dogs are a toy or gadget to be exchanged or returned whenever

That’s terrible for the dog!

As far as I read the service dog has to go back. I’m not sure id want to do that.

I’m an experienced dog owner and believe me dogs are a hell a lot of work.

They are a big responsibility

The cost adds up

I’ve spent over $3000 between vet bills, food and supplies for him and I’ve only had him for about 5 months

Honestly I don’t think you are ready to own a dog @anon25873142

Dogs are a long term commitment

I did say a few years when I’ve settled with my partner. I know he’s pretty responsible though.

My dog is a Jackapoo and he’s a real character

Not trained as well as a service dog might be tho!

I don’t think I can afford a dog on my own I’ve always maintained that. Not with £1000 a month support as I struggle with it. But my partner earns enough to be able to … That’s why I’m waiting until we have settled.

I second this. All “poos” or “doodles” are unethically bred, there is no breed standard in the AKC or UKC for these “breeds” basically it’s just a fancy term for a mixed breed mutt

My dog’s annual vet visit was $450, then another $400 for a year of heartworm/flea/tick preventative. Grooming runs around $125/month. But money isn’t even the biggest issue. It is that, since I struggle to leave the house, I failed to socialize her like I should. I failed her big time. They are so, so much work. It doesn’t bother me- I love training- but the socializing wasn’t well thought out. And now she’s mine for around 10 years, or maybe a little longer if she’s healthy.

I don’t understand what you mean by unethical

Since there is no breed standard lots of these poodle mixes are backyard bred and the parents of the pups are often not health tested and will pass along genetic conditions to the pups. I don’t hate poodle mixes just wish they were more quality bred. And I’m saying all this as an owner of a doodle. I wish I knew these things before I got my dog.

Ah ok I see what you mean

My family has always rescued dogs so never really dealt with breeders

That changed with my dog

The place I got him was a poodle breeder on a farm and the wife did it as a hobby

There was a mishap where their family dog who was a jack russell got into the breeding pen where the poodles were

His family were going to keep the offspring but it was too much for them.

So at 4 months old I took him home

He’s got a great temperament

Hope his family was healthy as I want him to have a good life

That’s such a neat story, the only reason I went with a doodle was I was currently living in a shared house and the landlord didn’t want a dog who shed. I really wanted a golden retriever for their temperament but he didn’t want to deal with the hair so I got a poodle mixed with a golden retriever. My intent on getting the dog was to train her as my service dog. I lucked out with her and she has made an amazing service dog, but if I were to do it over knowing what I know now I would have gone with a pure bred poodle
