The Activating and Tranquilizing Effects of First-Time Treatment with Aripiprazole, Olanzapine, Quetiapine, and Risperidone in Youth

OBJECTIVE:

To assess activating and tranquilizing effects of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in youth.

RESULTS:

In 327 antipsychotic-naïve youth originally initiating the four studied SGAs, discontinuation due to sedation was marginally highest with:

  • quetiapine (13.0%)
  • olanzapine (7.3%)
  • risperidone (4.2%)
  • aripiprazole (2.0%)

Ugh. Seroquel was going to be my next choice but if it’s more likely to be activating then it wouldn’t help because that’s why I’m dropping Abilify

Still only 13% of people said it was activating or tranquilizing - so you still have an 77% chance of it working…

Good point. I guess I won’t give up on it yet.

Maybe try seroquel XR. Having been on that and the IR form. The XR is less sedating. The problem with the IR is that a lot of folk need to take it twice a day. Taking it in the morning can really sedate you.
