Student with Schizophrenia Who Was Evicted Wins $75,000 in Damages

Good News for those who have schizophrenia and who are in college.

"A federal jury has ordered the University System of Georgia to pay $75,000 in damages to a schizophrenic student at Georgia State University who was kicked out of campus housing. In a verdict dated Thursday, the jury also found that the university could not order the unnamed student to do anything that would not be required of another student in order to continue living on the campus.

According to a post on the website of the law firm that represented the student, it was his refusal to answer a counselor’s questions about his “mild” schizophrenia that had prompted the public college to evict him. The student sued, asserting that that measure and others taken by the college violated the Americans With Disabilities Act."
