SSDI and tax returns

Just got a phone call from a Florida number that said I could go to jail for tax evasion and needed to call them. I didn’t know ppl on disability had to file taxes. I’ve been on ssd for five years and never got a letter one from the irs nor have I filed taxes.

Here in Canada - I need to do tax report on SSDI too

I have other income so my SSDI is taxed and I have to file taxes. I think if you make less than a certain amount it is tax free. I would just google it.

Honey, that’s a scam! I file taxes just because I’m a nerdy busybody that needs to get her butt in school. I am still waiting on some paperwork for state taxes.

From the web

If you do not make more than $25,000 a year and file as an individual or your household income is less than $32,000 per year and you file jointly, you will not have to pay taxes on your Social Security Disability benefits. If your income exceeds those limits, a portion of your disability payments may indeed be taxable.

There are phishing phone scams with people posing as if they’re from the IRS. I would ignore the phone call.

i had a phone call like that too. i called the local police station on an non emergency number and told them about it.

I get scam phone calls all of the time.
I don’t press any of the numbers, I just hang up.
They are so annoying.

I called SSA. They said it was a scam.

It could be a scam or con job from someone who wants your information or to steal your identity. I recommend calling up Social Security as soon as possible and tell them this. I have had SSDI for more than thirty years and I have not been required to pay a dime for taxes. I have worked most of the last 33 years and I file my taxes every year and the IRS knows all my financial situation and I have never got threatened with tax evasion. I get a form every year near tax season with my total SSDI I’ve received during the previous year. The form lists my income and it has a little work sheet to fill out to figure if my SSDI is taxable for that previous year. I have NEVER had to pay taxes on SSDI. It might be because I work but I also have never payed taxes during the years I was unemployed.

I’m 100% certain it’s a scam, for the Social Security Administration does not correspond via telephone (they will send you a letter via USPS). This is true for all government agencies.

I think even if you below the income level, you still have to file every year.
