Something someone said

I saw a drawing tutorial on YouTube and he said there is no talent only hard work. What do you think? Everyone says I’m talented, that I’m gifted. No one in my family plays a musical instrument and I’m self taught, except for someone years back who taught herself the organ in church. I would appreciate you telling me your opinion because it’s important to me.

I am gifted too…art and painting are my forte’…but I also play three instruments…glad you play music…good for you…I think hard work can make talent shine, but if you’re not very talented you might not be as good.

All the people who say to me today that I’m a gifted photographer didn’t see what my photography looked like fifty years ago.

The Beatles were the most popular, talented group ever. They were good at playing music, song writing and singing. They rose to astronomical heights of fame in the entertainment world. I think their success was a combination of hard work and natural talent.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon both had musical influences from their parents; Paul’s father was in a band at one time and John’s mother taught him how to play banjo and piano. So that’s how they got into playing music. When they picked up their first instruments they weren’t born being able to play. It took a lot of practice. And George Harrison practiced for hours every day until his fingers bled to get decent at guitar playing. Once they all got together it was a combination of talent and hard work that made them successful.

They went to Hamburg, Germany as teenagers to play in clubs and they worked their asses off playing live music; they played 104 days in a row, playing a 3 hour show on weekdays and 6 hour shows on weekends. All that playing honed their musical skills. All that hard work was the root of the Beatles future success. So I’ll say it for a third time, there’s such a thing as talent but you can’t rely on talent alone to be as successful as you want to be. It takes a lot of practice and hard work.

In the old days, the biggest bands started off playing at churches and small clubs and bars and fairs etc. and toiled away in anonymity for years traveling across the country playing these small, tough venues before they hit it big. Now, you can sit in your home and record videos for YouTube and get famous that way. But even Justin Bieber sang on the street for change before he got famous but he got his big break from posting videos on YouTube.

I play, or try to play, the Beatles on mandolin just about every day. My brother gave me a book of transcribed songs.
