I’m currently practising texturing in substance painter, it’s a really neat program, it lets you create edge wear on objects etc using curvature maps of the model. It also lets you easily add things like dirt in cavities of the model.

Here is a curvature map of the model which is generated by the program. White are edges and dark are cavities. You can then use this to make stuff like edge wear on metal.

Here is the ID map of the model. You simply assign different colors to different parts in the modeling program before you import it to substsance painter, and this lets you easily assign different materials to different parts of the object, instead of manually masking out the different materials.
