So down working my ass off at the cricket club today volunteering and had a run in with an interesting situation. Had this guy. Looked ok with a backpack walking around collecting cigarette butts. I’d suspect he was homeless and I said hi etc . I would have liked to do something positive but I’m no longer a smoker and a pack of 20 cigs are like $30. …
Made me kinda sad. I wish I could’ve done something positive but just was friendly and let him do his thing. I live in a first world country and even in this day and age we let far too many people fall through the loop…
What would you have done in such situation? I have to say I’m not made of money on a disability pension but appreciate your comments!
Brisbane Australia. They tax the hell out of cigs to try and get people to stop. Sadly the poorest people are often those who smoke! Yeah if I smoked would have hooked him up. No problems just now 10 years without so no chance of that!
I would have given him some money too, but I learned not to. My pops told me to always offer food or clothing to the poor, but never money; chances are they’ll use it for drugs.
Oh I know ! I would have bought him a pack of rolling papers; so he could squeeze out the icky tobacco and roll new ciggies instead of having to smoke nasty butt ends.
You can’t help everybody. I’m sure you will run into homeless people in the future when you have an extra few dollars that you can help. Your intentions were good, keep those alive and in the future when you are in a better position to help, then do what you can.
I was taught not to give money or support addictions.
My x boyfriend smokes and is on the pension.
I was going to give him money for Xmas but he will just spend it on cigarettes probably so I might give him a oven mit instead.
