Should I break free of the stigma?

I’ve been stable for more or less 10 years…my illness is well controlled and I have loads of insight…I don’t have many close friends but of the few that i do have (& they are mostly on Facebook), I was considering telling them about my schizophrenia. I was reluctant to tell them in the past because of the stigma…has anyone on here ever been treated differently after telling friends and/or family? I’m considering “revealing all” but not sure 100% if it’s a good idea…

Personally I don’t think this is a conversation you have over facebook. Meet them face to face in a coffee shop or at home to discuss it if you really want to tell them. Ask yourself first, what are you hoping to gain out of telling them? How do you think it will change the relationship?

At 50 years of age, I just don’t care who knows anymore. My friends, family and co-workers are all aware. It doesn’t bother me one whit.

A younger group of peers might not be as understanding, though. Think hard before you reveal your affliction. If the relationships ain’t broke, then what’s the point?

Well worst case scenario they don’t wanna be your friend. Some people definitely have a real fear of the Mentally Abnormal. I believe honesty is the best policy though. Shattering Stereotypes is too grandiose a reason for me to tell anyone, I tell people because I want to.
