Sharp as a tack?

I just came in from smoking outside. My girlfriend was in the kitchen and after I locked the door she told me to turn off the light outside. I went to the light switch and she was right. I didn’t know how she knew, I wouldn’t be able to see the light switch from where she was standing. I asked and she said she only heard the light inside click. She’s 79 years old and still as sharp as a tack. I’m always forgetting to lock the door, turn off the oven, turn off the lights, you name it and I’m guilty. I told her she has super-powers of perception.
I know a lot of you feel like your thinking/cognitive abilities are compromised by the illness, meds or both. But from a lot of the posts I’ve read, I think a lot of you are not only thoughtful and full of good insight, but also super smart in your own ways. A lot of stuff most so-called normal people wouldn’t even think about are the things that most of you are able to understand on a deeper level. So even if you are feeling lethargic or unable to think or do things the way you want, I still think all of you are in many ways very gifted and maybe just have a different way of perceiving/processing information.
To me at least, these differences may not always be such a bad thing. All sorts of celebrated intellectual figures had their own unique ways of seeing things and solving problems. So maybe you shouldn’t unfairly compare yourself with others you see as normal. It’s the unique and unusual thinkers that shake things up and create new ideas, art, literature and all the rest.

Yeah it’s true. Most schizophrenics I’ve met are extremely smart…often to their detriment!

John Nash is a good example. Did some amazing work but sz really held him back. Imagine if he had his full powers?

Most of us don’t even get that close and it’s a double edged sword for sure! We suffer big but your right with respect to some things! We, as a community, think way too much about some seriously mundane stuff that others wouldn’t!

Just my take on things! And btw your gal is on the money!

Damn she is sharp!! That’s awesome!

And i love the rest of your post. I am sitting here smoking and thinking of what I am good at. I think I am good at helping others and being non-judgemental.

I am good at writing. Both words and music. I am also good at listening. If you can get me to shut my mouth first.

This is interesting, I’ve always felt really stupid and slow due to my mental health. However, a month ago I had my worst episode yet, and I saw that everyone was wearing masks…like not in the sense of a physical mask, but I could see how most of our society builds up this ‘facade’ of success, intellect, health, happiness and things along those lines…like we’re all aware of this, its shown everyday, but there is no such thing as a truly genuine being.

We start as such, but are conditioned from an early age to be polarized, cookie-cutter societal “participators” and this either makes, or breaks us. I think as people with sz we’re faced with the fact that we have to work our ***'s off to just be able to function in a world that completely bashes on those who “can’t” live up to a masked world.

The sucky thing is, in order to have a society, this way of being is almost necessary to protect the general public…Its still very sad though…

Some of the people who put on the biggest mask of being successful (especially on social media forums like the dreaded Facebook) are the ones hiding the most secrets and going through shameful personal problems. Everyone puts on a mask in public to some degree. But when people make a habit of abusing others or committing certain crimes, I would like to think they are eventually found out. And I hope the current trend of empowered victims speaking out will continue and certain aspects of life that have been swept under the rug for so long will be re-examined and there will be some attempt to wipe that ■■■■ out.
