Severe chronic psychosis after allogeneic SCT from a schizophrenic sibling

SCT probably means stem cell therapy??

Im sure cases like this will be able to be cured with natalizumab, Im hoping that it turns out to be more then the 1/11 that they think can be helped with drugs like these for the immune system.

In the article they suggest 30-40%.

But I’m not sure they really know.

“It is unclear if immune processes play a key role in all patients with schizophrenia, or only in ~30–40% of them.”

Why are they only considering the question of a faulty immune response? The bone marrow is not only the place of the immune response (destruction of cells) but also of stem cells (regeneration of cells).

They make it sound like it is the defense system that has been modified and is thus at the root of the disease but couldnt it be that healthy regeneration doesnt happened via diseased stem cells instead?

PS: SCT means Stem Cell Transplant

@twinklestars

Have they ever transplanted sz human stem cells to mice?

Yes, they have, and it gave the mice schizophrenia like symptoms.

I think they’re using that as a theory because there are (fairly rare) cases of people “catching” auto immune diseases from transplants, so that may be the mechanism behind what happened to this guy.

However, alcoholism isn’t an auto immune disorder, so far as we know.

Turns out psych drugs also act on other things besides neurotransmitters, so it’s not surprising if stem cells have multiple methods of action. Considering what they are, it would be weird if they didn’t.

Works other way too:

Yes it does. But is the cure due to a modification in the autoimmune response or is it a consequence of healthy stem cells activity?

@far_cry0 i wonder where this whole stem cells to cure sz is at?! Its been years since we heard that stem cell therapy had the potential to cure the disease but nothing new has come out…

I think pharmaceutical company bribe the scientist no to carry stem cell research cuz it surely cure sz… pharmaceutical company have been investing billion dollar on sz drug…!!! So scientists are sold by pharmaceutical company .

I think only cure is identifying the sz genes and better medication…!!! Which will take decades …!!! Are we unlucky. .???

If what u are saying is true, we are â– â– â– â– â– â–  and a cure will never happen.

This world is so â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  corrupt hes most probably right

Only hope is if any of the billionaire donate sz search it will ez for scientist to reach conclusion … like ted stanley donated 650million to broad institute… we can hope with in few years we can see next big breakthrough …!!! Plz try to be hopeful…
We will get effective treatment in our life time…!!!

I guess to find answers to these kind of study they asked for records on all sz people who got BMT (can’t find that link but its on forum). Not sure how many got cured and if this was an outlier. Outliers give some interesting information though. Still wondering what did they find out. It should not have taken this long because its not doing another experiment. results are there for us to analyse. If another experiments are needed it should have started by now.

One thing it’s important to remember about bone marrow transplants and stem cell treatments from another person is rejection by the immune system. They pretty much have to kill off your immune system before a bone marrow transplant and then you have to take immune supressing drugs. Some patients who have had stem cell therapy for other conditions develop graft vs host disease which can be fatal.

I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry. They are developing stem cells with the markers that tag them as “foreign” removed, so anyone will be able to use them. After that, stem cell therapy should be reduced in risk and open to more people and conditions.

Admittedly they can’t tell yet if the stem cells are coming from a schizophrenic or not so it’s a plausible thing.

Here is the link :

"Simultaneously, we call upon haematologists and psychiatrists to inform us directly of their relevant case histories by submitting this appeal to their respective professional journals and websites. We venture that this way of crowd sourcing may not only save time and money, but may also bring to light information that has not been put into the databases of the BMT registries.

Please send the information about your cases, including identification numbers if registered, to >ln.thcertucmu@remmos.i<"

@twinklestars @GentleSoul Thoughts?

Seems like we are waiting for Universal donor stem cells to begin human trials for Sz:

“It should be noted that human development is much longer than that of a rodent and therefore growing personalized interneurons from patient-derived stem cells would require a great deal of time and resources.”

Alternatively, some have proposed the development of stem cell banks, which would provide about 150 human ESC lines that would have sufficient homology for the use in more than 90% of the population. Further, the ability to grow highly enriched populations of interneurons remains a challenge.

In conclusion, the results presented here are promising and suggest that interneuron transplants may be an effective treatment strategy for schizophrenia. However, more work needs to be done at the preclinical level to understand the specific role of interneuron sub-types and the long-term effects of ESC(embryonic Stem Cells) transplants. Further, improved methods for generating large quantities of purified interneuron precursors rapidly will be required before this exciting new therapy can move to the clinic.:
