School days

Many of us are going back to school these past or next few weeks. I thought maybe we could share how our first week went.

My first week of nursing school was overwhelming. So much information at a fast pace. I’m not very good at taking blood pressure readings and need “remediation and practice.” They don’t really teach you anything, they just hand you the equipment and say figure it out. On the bright side I met a few classmates and exchanged emails and phone numbers to start a study group with. I contacted the schools counseling center to make an appointment as I’m feeling really overwhelmed and anxious. My care coordinator is encouraging me to get in touch with them as well. Later today I’m going to open lab time to practice taking bp’s with my mom, hopefully she’ll keep me calm. I can’t believe in only 4 more weeks we’ll be out of the lab and in an actual clinical setting taking care of real patients. I know nothing! So overwhelmed and anxious.

How has everyone else’s first weeks been?

How long have you been in the nursing profession? How hard was it to get in to the program?

For me… I’m sad to say… I’m going to have to drop the on-line class. I just don’t have the creative writing in me at the moment.

The volume of assignments that are required is just a little to much butted up against my Chem 101 class and my job and some of the other stuff I want and need to do to stay level.

I really need the Chem class the most so I’ll be down to one class… plus lab. I was hoping to manage both classes… but oh well… slow and steady I guess. Not happy with myself… but then… I’m feeling a little off today.

I’ll get better. I feel better then yesterday. But I’m a little jumbled today…

I’ve been in the nursing profession for 2 weeks now, LOL! I’m going to a small private college for nurses and it was pretty competitive to get in. I’m going part-time at night, taking 7 credits this semester. I spent a year getting the prerequisites done because I hadn’t taken a science class since high school and also needed to get back into the groove of school after being away from it for so long. I already had a BA in Sociology so I think that greased the wheels on getting into the program and I scored pretty well on the entrance exam- TEAS.

Congrats for getting into the nursing program!! I know how competitive those programs can be. Google and YouTube are your friends. Anything you don’t understand, it will be on the internet. Nursing is a very stressful occupation, but very rewarding.
@SurprisedJ I’m sorry you had to drop the one class, but you really need to do what is best for you. Don’t worry about it you have all the time in the world. We’re the same age, I think I’m a year older, and I’m finally enrolled in a program that fits my personality.
My school doesn’t go by semesters, but five and a half week sessions. I had to take this session off, but will start full time in October. I’m nervous about being full time, but I think I can do it.
Good luck to you both with school! And J if you have any questions about Chemistry, message me, I got an A in that class. :sunny:

Has anyone else notified their school of being disabled and getting special accomodations? I met with the counseling center yesterday to touch base and get another support in my life. The lady gave me a form to have my pdoc fill out. I’m nervous about having the school know. I mean I know the teachers won’t know that I’m SZA just that I have a disability. Anyone else?

I’ve registered with the student with disabilities office. It’s really helped me a lot. I get tutors when or if I need them. I’ve had help with taking notes until I got the hang of it. My very first semester I got the school councilor to really lay out a plan of what to register for that would be honestly beneficial and not hit or miss.

So far the office has been very good with confidential stuff.

When I fist started… I had a feeling I might be in deep water… I’m not to proud to grab any life ring offered.

Do you take advantage of extra time for tests and a quiet place to take them? (I can’t remember if you are an online student or not?)

I like to do one on campus class and one on-line class.

Yes, when I first started… I took advantage of the extra time and the place to take the test. I would take it in an empty room with a proctor. This chem class seems a bit heavy… so I might be asking for that help again.
