Schizophrenia is a cognitive illness: time for a change in focus

I am certain that SZ shaved a bit off my IQ. I know I used to be able to visualize solutions to problems more easily before the illness hit. I still can, but it takes more effort. My cognition was initially horrible when the illness first hit and it took many years of hard work to get it back. Think I’ve gotten most back, but not all of it.

My IQ has dropped considerably since I was placed on antipsychotics years ago.
Hate to blame the meds but…

i think it can be both, it is cognitive ofcourse, but can be caused by real physical problems. its stress induced, but stress can come from life events but also from things like infections, undiagnosed illnesses, allergies, etc. which can induce it. So i guess you may be right, it is technically cognitive but can be caused by physiological problems which might call for physiological intervention and not solely cognitive intervention

That’s because my verbal intelligence, which is used very much here, is far superior to my non-verbal/performance/spatial intelligence .

A lot of people have thought like you ie very good verbal intelligence = very good other intelligence , but it’s not always true.

I think the negative effect of APs on intelligence may be dose dependent .

Yea when they lowered dose for me cognition improved.

Does this person even know the illness that he is talking about?

I might have to read the journal to understand it fully but this just seems like a really deficient theory to our illness. Idk.

John nash had schizophrenia. It’s what i thought when i was reading the document

People like Elyn Saks and John Nash were outliers in terms of intelligence ,rather than being the norm for people with schizophrenia .
People on this forum as a group will have better cognitive skills than those who would struggle to use a computer.
Even so, despite better cognition, it would be fair to say more than a few of us have some cognitive difficulties .

IMO it’s cognition that has the biggest influence on outcomes . How much that does , or does not, tie in with negative symptoms I wouldn’t like to say .

From the poll it seems that antipsychotics have a mediocre effect on cognition . It does seem to be a very hard nut for drug companies to crack.

yeah it would be nice if the support systems foucused on other things than ap’s. Maybe that’s only in some dreamworld of the future.
