So it’s more of a cognitive illness rather than psychotic. I could be wrong that is what I’m reading.
This is pretty much the consensus about sz these days, yes.
I call ■■■■■■■■ on this. Cognitively I am fine.
^ Very few things are ever 100% . Problems with cognition affect a sizeable number of people with schizophrenia .
Cognitively don’t have problems think like autism there are subsets of schizophrenia although they haven’t been identified yet.

I don’t totally dismiss that possibility. For me crystallised intelligence is much better than fluid intelligence. Executive functioning isn’t very good - NB organising and planning, sequential tasks .
Both Asperger’s and schizophrenia , which I have , can negatively affect EF.
I have never had cognitive problems but that’s not to say sz doesn’t negatively affect me.
Delusions distort my perception of reality and impair my judgement and decision making skills. I lost a lot of good jobs because of this so it’s a problem but I don’t necessarily think it’s a cognitive one.
Just my two cents.
Psychotic states fck up your cognition though imo.
Well when you are actively psychotic everything is lost. I don’t debate that but that’s what hospitals are for.
Putting the focus back on cognition may facilitate finding treatments for the illness before psychosis ever emerges.
I wonder what they mean by that though
My cognition was always not very good. Maybe they can predict schizophrenia issues later in life with people like me.
Maybe it’s meant to remind you of Kraepelin and dementia praecox. Not sure though.
With SZ, everything is lost either way.
If it’s a cognitive illness, how come kids with ADHD and LD aren’t given APs?
golf shot golf shot, golf he’s hittin the ball!
In a nutshell - My practical skills suck . How much is due to Asperger’s and how much is due to schizophrenia, I don’t know .
my cognition only improved with time and ‘maturity’. Before i was lazy and didn’t apply myself. I have a good iq. fear takes away some of my functioning sometimes and makes it hard to learn.
My cognition got better with Omega 3 but it was never had to begin with that’s why I think there are subsets because some have lots of negatives others don’t.
For me cognitive issues pre date the onset of severe mental illness. That’s not to deny that sz might have added to that .
I’ve not tried any of the myriad things recommended here that supposedly give a cognitive boost .
For some of us getting anyone to realise we have any cognitive problems can be an uphill struggle. In the short interactions with other people including health professionals it’s hard for anyone to see. The psychiatric lot know about my organising and planning difficulties because I told them . They may also know about my executive functioning difficulties in general , as this was really emphasised at my post diagnosis Asperger’s appt and may have been passed on to the pdoc etc .
It takes interacting with me in situations that are not predominantly verbal to clearly see that there are cognitive issues . As said a few posts up, my practical skills suck.
I wouldnt have picked up you have cognitive difficulties because your posts are always so well written :-)
