There’s evidence that lupus can mimic sz-like symptoms. Lupus is an autoimmune disease.
Interesting. Here is another article about the biological anomalies in schizophrenia:
Biological hypotheses, risk factors, and biomarkers of schizophrenia - PubMed (nih.gov)
“Schizophrenia-related biomarkers include measurable biochemical changes induced by stress (elevated allostatic load), mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and circadian rhythm disturbances.”
Ramaekers et al. suggest that in rare cases, even anti-FOLR1 antibodies might contribute to schizophernia. There is one report in PubMed on a boy with catatonia and anti-FOLR1 antibodies. I would say that the jury is still out on this particular hypothesis, but it’s interesting.
In a recent study, some cases of cerebral folate deficiency were traced down to variations of KDM6B, a gene whose disfunction is known to predispose the body to the generation of autoantibodies. This is very curious. In this particular case, though, the phenotype is closer to autism spectrum disorder.
