Tonight on the way back home from a party with Star Sister, our Uber driver took a wrong turn. Which seems like such a harmless thing, and it ended up being harmless, but for about five minutes we were off route. We didn’t know if we were just lost, or on our way to be murdered. We texted and shared location with like five people making sure they knew to call the police if we didn’t respond within ten minutes. The world is just a scarier place when you’re not a cis guy. It really put a damper on our whole evening. I was really glad not to be alone in the back of that car, though. This is why girls travel in packs.
Guys of the world, please keep this in mind when you’re going about your day. Our driver probably didn’t think twice about missing a turn and going another route. He probably thought it was just normal taxi driver behavior. But we were scared for our lives.
Thanks. I felt so silly after we got back on the route, and then I felt like a jerk for being suspicious. But in the moment, it was a very real fear. It’s good to know it wasn’t just us.
I’m winding down now. It’s okay. I want to tell Mr. Star so I can talk it out and calm down, but I also feel guilty. He told us to call him for a ride, but we assured him we were strong and independent, and weren’t afraid to take an Uber alone.
Just start the conversation with “I need you to listen and not tell me you told me so because I’m having a lot of emotions about this and need to talk to you.”
I’ve said that same thing many times to my partner.
Also, being strong and independent and being terrified at a possibly dangerous situation are not mutually exclusive. You’re still very strong and independent.
Life is sometimes like a movie. We are all playing our role of different characters. I think i scare people sometimes doing things out of the ordinary, which is normal for me. I learned to behave. Here in Perth stuff against common sense seems to be here the norm. Perth where the arts meet.
