I think I know what causes Schizophrenia. In my opinion it’s a symptom of a bigger problem with society. I think that it’s caused by all the rules. The thousands of laws, bylaws, religious laws, and then physical laws that make up the shared delusion that we call reality. Schizophrenics are just those who break from having so many rules enforced onto them… One of the big factors for causing it is stress and I suspect that it’s mainly stress from feeling constricted. I find that when I find myself getting caught in a loop and falling to delusion that I can usually trace it back to a moment where I felt so constricted and that so much of my free will had been taken away that I started to make up my own rules for everything in hopes of escaping the common delusion to one that I would enjoy more. I’m not saying that sets of codes are all useless, just that the idea of rule in itself is all about taking away free will and that society would work much better off with guidelines instead of rules. Most people think that would cause chaos, but I’m an optimist and I think that as a society we would find a suitable way to live without concrete rules and in the end would be much better off.
It’s an interesting theory, but schizophrenia is pretty much the oldest mental illness in the book. Cases have been documented since before societies had organized governments. In older texts, it usually shows up as demonic possession or being a spiritual guidance.
But if excessive rules caused you great stress, it could have triggered your psychosis. Mine was triggered by sexual assault. I could have benefitted from people following the rules a bit more.
I don’t think my sz was caused by stress, in fact I was really laid back the week it happened.
I think depending on what country you come from and the beliefs, laws etc will determine what the delusions are, add what sort of things you like or do.
A few doctors have told me even though you have Schizophrenia, your core beliefs and personality would still be there weather you have it or not. So if you are violent, you probably will be with sz or no sz as an example
Societal pressure definitely plays a role. I read somewhere that certain cultures have different delusions/hallucinations based on being part of a certain culture.
I was contacted.
They were inside of me.
It’s not even a disease, it’s a murder. You even have it in your movies but never call it schizophrenia. The things that happen to me can be seen in all of your paranormal films, films containing spirits, and magic.
So there ya go. It wasn’t society, it wasn’t a bump on the head, or a disease in the womb, it wasn’t trauma. My mind was taken over and so were my feelings, aliens were popping in to say hi, shadow people were running around, pan the god came, i was nearly murdered on a pyramid, i was having induced nde’s where i floated, and then random ass people started showing up who had supernatural powers.
They don’t tell you some of our “symptoms”, during psychosis it was always 3:00. For like a month straight everytime i looked it was 3:00.
I have since though begun to examine society and it’s rules, it’s lawless, it’s a devouring beast, and it can’t get enough. Cash dictates our rules everytime, and therefore laws aren’t even real. “Is this bad? Better check my wallet and see.”
I don’t agree. Stress is bad for people with schizophrenia but I don’t think that “rules” would cause an otherwise normal, healthy person to become schizophrenic. I believe that it is a combination of factors that bring on schizophrenia. Environment, a virus during a woman’s pregnancy, or that we are just born with a propensity to get it. The “rules” may certainly contribute to it. But saying that our society causes it does not make sense to me.
There’s a lot of things in the world that can make schizophrenia worse, or more difficult to live with, but it’s caused by bad brain chemistry.
The stress of feeling constricted by the rules of society affects everyone, even if you don’t have Schizophrenia.
But free will without definite rules of responsibility would undoubtedly lead to a situation where the strong would naturally dominate the weak. And when you have Schizophrenia that wouldn’t be a situation you would be able to tolerate for very long.
You either have Schizophrenia or you don’t. Whatever society you live in is going to be tough. Navigating any society and the rules which bind civilian life is always going to be difficult in many ways. Society has expectations, norms, values which pose dilemmas for people with Schizophrenia. Replacing them with new ones won’t change a jot how a person with Schizophrenia manages in their day to day life. It will only offer a whole new set of rules to follow.
I think schizophrenia is breaking free of society. The mind rejects the neuro-typical society and this can be stressful. Joseph Campbell wrote about the similarities between shamanism and schizophrenia. Shamans usually go through an arduous initiation, and then the mind cracks and you enter a metaphysical plane. You experience another world. For the shaman this other world includes spirits, which is not dissimilar from the visions and voices of a schizophrenic. Mircea Eliade wrote a book called SHAMANISM - Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy published by Princeton University Press.
