So I told him. He’s 58, one year older than me. The worst thing he does is this: I’m in my room on the computer like right now and he’s in the kitchen or his bedroom and he waits and waits and waits and when I relax my guard he will just do a totally annoying cough or some other noise. It drives me crazy. Number one, what the hell is he doing playing on weakness when someone is in their own room that I pay rent on? You don’t do that.
So 5 minutes ago he did it again and I got angry and poked my head out of my room and asked him, “Aren’t you embarrassed at being so annoying?”. Because he’s always telling me this cool stuff did when he was younger but now instead of being dignified in his old age and living up to his (in his opinion) cool past he just goes around annoying me and the neighbors people. Come to think about it, it gives me pleasure in a way that he’s such an ass and that he makes everybody mad. Because I should be thanking him for the free insight into an idiots life.
Are you sure he’s coughing to annoy you? That seems questionable. If he wasn’t even in the same room as you, how would he know when your guard is down and you’re trying to relax?
Like @LED said. Are you sure its meant for you? Maybe wear headphones if its annoying you. Maybe your roommates just got a cold at the moment. Sounds a bit over-sensitive??
If you’ve ever lived with someone who was homeless for awhile and/or who has been in jail or ran the streets, these guys have instincts like a cat and have surviving techniques that a regular person isn’t aware of. I’ve lived in close quarters with some of these guys and find a lot of their experiences fascinating (Somehow, as I get older, I am rather curious about the darker side of life and the darker side of people) but at the same time, their hype-vigilance really gets to me.
I would guess you would always hear roommates in close quarters like an apartment or house. People make noise moving about, coughing, listening to TV/music, etc. I wouldn’t take it personally.
My roommate slaps his knees all the time and listens to pop music. He doesn’t always flush the toilet properly. Sometimes he cuts his toenails in th bathtub and leaves them there.
I usually leave dirty dishes out a lot, I have a huge hamster cage in the living room. I listen to black metal loudly.
Sometimes I’m like Kramer from Seinfeld bursting through the door then talking a mile a minute then I’m gone.
What I’m saying is all roommates can be annoying as heck in some way just gotta let it be
