Requiring less sleep?

So in the summer, I slept for like 8 or 9 hours a night and took 1-2 hour naps some days. This was my first week back in school, this is my junior year, and I have been functioning off of less sleep, like 6-8 hours and no naps, but more caffeine.

Perhaps my brain having something to do is making me sleep less? One of my friends goes to Notre Dame and is one hardcore student, and he said that on summer breaks and winter breaks, he sleeps nearly twice as much than he does than when he is in school. He said he was sleeping for around 12 hours a day after his internship for the last few weeks of summer. I remember sleeping more during the summers when I was in high school, but I wasnt schizophrenic and on three sedating medications in high school.

Anyone else not sleep as much when they have stuff going on? I mean I am a little shocked at how I went to sleep at 1130 last night and woke up at 630 this morning. I usually sleep from 1230-930 in the summers, and take naps half of the time. Now I did just take my morning meds so I might fall asleep in an hour.

After months of sleeping for as long as I could I find myself waking up earlier and earlier. I guess I’ve gotten over the dread of being conscious that plagued me for a while. Its weird how things changed. I was practically a sleep addict and I loved dreaming more than anything else in my life, but even dreams get boring. I got dissapointed by the chaos of them. Now I dont really care to dream at all and its more about continuing the process of reprogramming myself to try and beat this disease and live down what has happened to me. I still dont really have a lot going on but I should be geetting a job in the next few months so I need to prepare myself for that kind of commitment and schedule. Probably means even less sleep down the road.

I can understand what you’re saying, but for me sleep has always been a gauge to tell how my mental health is. When I start staying up all night my mom always knows I’m getting worse. When I was first put on psych meds when I was 13 I had a hard time staying awake in class. My Geomtry teacher told me he gave me a bad grade because I always slept in his class. I don’t know if there is a corelation though between when you are busy and how much you sleep. Ask your tdoc. :sunny:

With my school schedule now, I have to wake up at 6:30 am. On some days, I don’t get to sleep until 11:30 pm. But on those days, I am very sleepy during the day, and one time even took a nap after getting home. On my days off, I get my usual 11-13 hours of sleep. With these meds, I just need more sleep.

My sleep is all messed up. I sleep very little and at chaotic hours of the day or night. I’ve become adjusted to it over the years and I find it hard to imagine sleeping for eight continuous hours. I seem to be doing ok like this, though I wonder how I’d feel and think if I slept like a normal person.

Thanks to my bus times I have to wake up by 5:30. Since our timer on the coffee maker decided to break I’ve been up by 5:00 to start the machine, I then go back to sleep for the remaining time.
I can never sleep before midnight either, basically impossible for me. During weekends I take as much time as I can to sleep.

Guess what’s the time now over here? No surprise, 4 o’clock in the morning — I haven’t sleep.

Sounds like you’re smart enough in time management.

I’m the same way @mortimermouse. I sleep a lot during the school breaks, and when school is in session I’m sleeping like 6-8 hours a night. (The problem is waking up for me, but when I do get up I feel refreshed).

My boyfriend’s sleep is very chaotic. For the years I’ve known him I don’t think he’s slept once through the night. He’s a night owl, and sometimes during the day he’ll get a solid 4 hours, but that’s the most I’ve seen.

Yeah, even though I do manage my time decently it still doesn’t help me much when it comes to sleeping. I’m kept up at night by other things, leaving me usually with 3-4 hours of sleep a night.
