Reading the humanities for happiness

For perhaps 25 years in my youth I could not consider and think about topics that are generally called “the humanities.” I was a very devoted scientist. I have since had the time to read and think and I can now reflect on some very important humanities questions. I have found so much comfort in this form of introspection and study.
I know a few people who are just like I used to be–all science or all engineering. I think they are sad now.
I find that I must make room for the humanities and arts (like psychology, religion, or literature) if I am going to adapt and be happy.

good for you.

i think ill end up getting into govt philosophy and religion to keep me interested in life. my dad is very religious, so i’d like to inherit his title someday

In the old days some universities made you study the humanities first before other things. I think if everyone did that the world would be a way better place!

Having an open mind tends to be a good thing. Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies. Perhaps what I had in mind is the “open mind” that NIck wrote about. I use my reading as a sort of crutch. Better minds give me coping ideas. I am always, it seems, trying to get a better self-understanding. But what is "self-understanding?"
I ask a lot of questions. I am introspective. Mostly I am just trying to keep my life a little above the level of depression. “Understanding” answers those questions.
I just read two books about God, and now I am reading a lighter book, a mystery.
By the way, I am a slow reader!

I agree with you, @Here4You. I’ve read a lot of theology and it made me go from an extremely miserable to an extremely happy and well adjusted person. Nowadays, I am reading a lot of English classical literature. And it makes me very happy as well. I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I studied a lot of psychology and science in college as a young woman and it did not make me very happy.

@SkinnyMe It is so good to find someone who feels the same way I do. Thanks.
